2.24.09 Seitz Memorial 353

Norman G. Einspruch, Ph.D., Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Dean Emeritus of the College of Engineering, gave the opening address at a Scientific Symposium in Memory of Frederick Seitz held February 24th, 2009 at The Rockefeller University in New York City. Seitz was President of the National Academy of Sciences and served as President of Rockefeller University, among many significant positions in government and the academy. In 1989, Seitz was awarded the honorary degree D.Sc. by the University of Miami.

Professor Einspruch?s speech served as the backdrop to a day of reflection and praise to Seitz, who served as Einspruch?s mentor. Among those who spoke were Nobel Laureate Paul Nurse, President of the Rockefeller University, Purnell W. Choppin, President Emeritus, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Stanley B. Prusiner, M.D., Director of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, and Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine.

Appearing (L to R) in the photo with Einspuch is Dr. Prusiner, who received crucial funding arranged by Seitz and won The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1997 for his discovery of the normal form of the prion protein (PrP) that led to the explanation for the cause of bovine spongiform encephalopathy ("mad cow disease") and its human equivalent, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

A 2008 Holiday Celebration hosted by the University of Miami Citizen's Board at the home of Citizen's Board member, Alejandra Lamas.

The Citizen's Board has a long record with the College of Engineering. Recently, a lead gift to the College's Society of Woman Engineers (SWE) helped fund the best-attended regional conference in SWE history. The planning committee of twenty-four young technically-minded women came together to form a team, and received an education beyond that of the classroom earning them the SOAR Award for Excellence.

Established in 1946, the University of Miami Citizens Board is a select group of more than 300 business, professional, and civic leaders who actively support the University's philanthropic efforts and promote UM programs through firsthand contact with students, faculty, administrators, and facilities on all of the University's campuses.

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI NAMES DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AS DEAN OF THE

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

I am here as the new Dean of the College of Engineering (as of September 1, 2007) because I share the vision that President Donna Shalala and Provost Thomas LeBlanc have for the University of Miami to enhance its national reputation as an AAU qualified institution of higher learning.

I welcome this challenge with great enthusiasm, and I look forward to working with the College's quality undergraduate students, creative graduate students, renowned faculty, dedicated staff and supportive alumni and friends. Together, I am confident that we will be able to achieve a greater global recognition for both the College itself and the university. We will continue to attract the best and the brightest students, which in turn will facilitate our recruitment of the most renowned scholars to join our world class faculty. We will excel in the integration of research and education, thus demonstrating that critical thinking is essential to the process of learning. We will educate for career success by providing our graduates with both knowledge in the fundamentals and life-long learning skills so that they may continuously replenish their knowledge base. We will strengthen our collaboration with the other University of Miami schools and colleges, all to take advantage of the breadth and strength represented across the university. Additionally, we will continuously share our goals and ambitions with our alumni and friends; with their thoughtful guidance and generous support, we will make our aspirations a reality.

Finally, I invite you to join me in an exciting journey of learning, critical thinking, personal growth and institution building. I look forward to personally welcoming every one of you who decides to join the College of Engineering on this journey.

James M. Tien, Ph.D., NAE Distinguished Professor and Dean
