EDUCATION POLICY AND GUIDELINES

PURPOSE:

To provide information regarding educational and improvement opportunities for contractor employees that work on-site for the University of Miami.

DEFINITIONS:

Contractor Employees

Employees who work for a Contractor that provides services to the University of Miami are eligible to participate in this program.  The Contractor Employee must work on-site at one of the University of Miami campuses which are located in Miami-Dade County.

Office of the Vice President-Human Resources

The University office that manages the Contractor Employee Enrichment Program.

POLICY:

It is the policy that the Contractor provide eligible employees the opportunity to attend classes offered by the University during work hours, depending on class availability.  Employees attending classes during their regular work hours will be paid their hourly rate of pay while attending classes.  Classes are three (3) hours each week. .

PROCEDURE:

Enrollment Form

Interested Contract Employees are required to complete an enrollment form.  Forms may be completed  online   or can be obtained from the Office of the Vice President-Human Resources or the supervisor.  Completed forms, signed by the contractor employee and the supervisor, can be faxed to the Education Program Coordinator at 305-284-3782.

 Pre-Requisites

All Contractor Employees participating in the program require a Placement Test.   To register for a Placement Test, please contact the  Education Program Coordinator at 305-284-4476.

Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) requires that the employee take a Miami-Dade County test (TABE Test) that is offered at various locations throughout Miami-Dade County.  The test time for the TABE will be on the employee's own time.

Class Placement

Class placement is based on the results of the Placement Test.  Class space is limited to 15 students.  A minimum of five students is required to proceed with a class.

Notification/Availability

The Education Program Coordinator will notify the supervisor of the employee of contractor or company representative regarding admission to a class and confirm dates, time, and location.  If a class is full, the employee will be placed on a waiting list until there is class availability.

LAYOFF:

On-site employees of contractors that are placed on layoff during winter and summer breaks are eligible to continue to take classes during these periods.

TERMINATION:

Upon the effective date of termination of an employee, the education benefits will cease.
