Who are the security escorts?

 

Security Supervisors, Security Officers and Student Security Patrol Officers (SSPO).

 

How will I recognize an SSPO?

 

All SSPO's wear white UM shirts with "Security" printed on the back. All SSPO's are full-time University students working on a part-time basis for the UM Police Department. The campus Security Coordinator supervises them.

 

How do I request a security escort?

 

Call UM Police Department, at 8-6666 or from any blue light phone located on campus. You may also ask any SSPO or any uniformed security officer you see on campus.

 

Who can request a security escort?

 

Any student, faculty, staff member or campus visitor.

 

Is there a charge for the security escort?

 

No, the service is free. However, you may be asked to present your "Cane Card."

 

What security escort services are available?

 

The following are available:

 

The Sergeant Sebastian evening shuttles cover the same route as the Hurry ?Cane shuttles  do during the day. They make pickups at all shuttle stops from 6:15 pm to 6:00 am, 7 days a week.

 

Foot security escorts, are available from 6:30 pm to 6:00 am, 7 days a week for those who cannot wait for a Sergeant Sebastian shuttle.

 

Sergeant Sebastian is also available for personal security escorts between 12:00 am and

3:00 am, 7 days a week upon request.

 

When are security escorts available?

 

24 hours per day, 7 days a week. A police officer or Security Guard may walk with you.

 

How many security officers are on duty every night?

 

An average of 15 officers are on duty nightly.

 

If  I decide to stay on campus during holiday breaks, are security officers available then?

 

Yes, security is provided 365 days a year.

 

What do they do when they are not providing security escorts?

 

SSPO?s look for crimes in progress, survey areas for security purposes, assist the community with directions and information, and patrol parking lots during special events and many other services.
