UM Fellowships - All new UM doctoral students in all UM doctoral programs are eligible. This award is given as a top-off stipend to a departmental teaching or research assistantship. The award is for five years. Students must apply directly to their individual Graduate Program Director. The deadline is early January for most programs though some departments may have earlier deadlines. Graduate Program Directors submit their nominations to the Graduate School. Graduate School committees make the final selections across departments.

AAUW American Fellowships: Support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations, and scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave or for preparing completed research for publication. Applicants must be U.S citizens or permanent residents. One-year postdoctoral research leave fellowships, dissertation fellowships, and summer/short-term research publication grants are offered ranging from $6,000 to $30,000 in support.

AAUW Career Development Grants: The Career Development Grants support women who hold a bacholor's degree and are preparing to advance their careers, or re-enter the work force. Special consideration is given to women of color, and women pursuing their first advanced degree or credentials in nontraditional fields. Grants provide support for course work beyond a bachelor's degree, including a master's degree, second bachelor's degree, or specialized training in technical or professional fields. Funds are available for distance learning. Course work must be taken at an accredited two-or-four-year college or university in the United States, or at a technical school that is fully licensed or accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. Grant ranges from $2,000 to $12,000.

AAUW International Fellowships: awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institions are supported. Fellowships include Master's/Professional Fellowship ($18,000), Doctorate Fellowship ($20,000) and Postdoctoral Fellowship ($30,000). Several fellowshiops are available for study outside of the U.S.

AAUW Selected Professions Fellowships: The Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who intend to pursue a full-time course of study at accredited U.S. institutions during the fellowship year in one of the designated degree programs where women's participation traditionally has been low. This is a one year fellowship ranging from $5,000 to $12,000 in support.
Eligibility Requirements- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing a graduate degree in any of the following programs: Architecture (M.Arch, M.S.Arch), Computer/Information Sciences (M.S.), Engineering (M.E., M.S.), Mathematics/Statistics (M.S.). Fellowships in the following degree programs are restricted to women of color, who have been underrepresented in these fields: Business Administration (M.B.A., E.M.B.A.), Law (J.D.), Medicine (M.D., D.O.).

American Anthropological Association AAA Minority Dissertation Fellowship - The annual AAA Minority Dissertation Fellowship is intended to encourage members of ethnic minorities to complete doctoral degrees in anthropology, thereby increasing diversity in the discipline and/or promoting research on issues of concern among them by providing $10,000 for a year to qualified candidates.
Eligibility Requirements- An applicant must be: (1) a US citizen; (2) a member of a historically underrepresented ethnic minority group, including, but not limited to : African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians or Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latino/as, Chicano/as, and Pacific Islanders; (3) enrolled in a full-time academic program leading to a doctoral degree in anthropology at the time of application; (4) admitted to degree candidacy before the dissertation fellowship is awarded; and (5) a member of the American Anthropological Association.

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Minority Doctoral Fellowships
Fellowships of up to $12,000 are available to minority candidates who have been accepted into a doctoral accounting program. Students must have earned a masters degree and/or have completed at least 3 years of full-time experience in the accounting practice.
Eligibility Requirements - Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements; Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, be a CPA or plan to pursue the CPA credential, earned a Master’s Degree and/or completed at least 3 years of full-time experience in the accounting practice, applied to and/or been accepted into a doctoral program with a concentration in accounting and be a minority student of Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino; or Native American ethnicity.

American Philosophical Society Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research- Grants will be available to doctoral students; master's degree candidates are not eligible. Applicants who have received Lewis and Clark Fund grants may reapply after an interval of two years. The competition is open to U.S. residents wishing to carry out research anywhere in the world. Foreign applicants must either be based at a U.S. institution or plan to carry out their work in the United States.
Student applicants should ask their academic advisor to write one of the two letters of recommendation, specifying the student's qualifications to carry out the proposed work and the educational content of the trip. ABSTRACT: The American Philosophical Society's Lewis and Clark Fund encourages exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation. Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, and paleontology, but grants will not be restricted to these fields. Each grantee will submit a brief report on his or her trip for archiving in the APS Library.

American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program (MFP)- An MFP fellowship is a professional training appointment into a community of other students and professionals who hold similar professional interests that provides stipends, or living allowances, to students for a maximum of 3 years and must be renewed annually.
Eligibility Requirements - Applicants must be American citizens or permanent resident aliens and should be enrolled full-time in a doctoral program specializing in clinical, counseling and school psychology, or other programs associated with the delivery of mental health services. African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students are especially encouraged to apply.

Elizabeth Munsterberg Koppitz Child Psychology Graduate Fellowships - The American Psychological Foundation (APF) provides financial support of innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential both now and in generations to come. APF will award up to four Koppitz Graduate Student Fellowships to promote the advancement of knowledge and learning in the field of child psychology of up to $25,000 for graduate work; up to two $5,000 scholarships for runners-up.
Eligibility Requirements - To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must have achieved doctoral candidacy. Students can apply before having passed their qualifying exams, but proof of having advanced to doctoral candidacy will be required before funds are released.

ETS R & D Fellowship and Internship Programs - The goal of the ETS R&D Fellowship and Internship programs is to provide talented individuals, especially women and underrepresented minority scholars and students, opportunities to carry out research under the mentorship of ETS senior research scientists and psychometricians. Areas of emphasis in research encouraged by this program include measurement theory, validity, natural language processing and computational linguistics, cognitive psychology, learning theory, linguistics, speech recognition and processing, teaching and classroom research, statistics, and international large scale assessments.

The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships
The Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships seek to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. To facilitate this goal the Fellowship grants awards at the Predoctoral, Dissertation and, Postdoctoral levels to students who demonstrate excellence, a commitment to diversity and a desire to enter the professoriate.
The Fellowship makes the following annual awards
- Approximately 60 Predoctoral Awards at $20,000 per year for up to three years.
- Approximately 35 Dissertation Awards at $21,000 for one year
- Approximately 20 Postdoctoral Awards at $40,000 for one year
Eligibility Requirements - All citizens or nationals of the United States regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
- Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement
- Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level
- Individuals enrolled in or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at a U.S. educational institution, and
- Individuals who have not earned a doctoral degree at any time, in any field.

Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship
This merit-based fellowship covers the cost-of-attendance and includes a personal-support stipend for U.S. citizens pursuing a PhD in fields related to applied physical and engineering sciences. The fellowship provides a $31,000/ 9-month stipend plus full tuition and it is renewable annually for up to five years. Fellows with dependent children receive an additional $5,000 annual stipend.

The Humboldt Research Fellowship enables highly-qualified scientists and scholars of all nationalities and all disciplines to carry out research projects for extended periods of time in cooperation with academic hosts at research institutions in Germany. Fellowships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, the quality and feasibility of the proposed research and the applicant's publications.

IBM PhD Fellowship Awards Program - The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive worldwide program, which honors exceptional Ph.D. students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study. These include: computer science and engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering, physical sciences (including chemistry, material sciences, and physics), mathematical sciences (including optimization), business sciences (including financial services, communication, and learning/knowledge), and service science, management, and engineering (SSME). Preference will be given to students who have had an IBM internship or have closely collaborated with technical or services people from IBM. This program also supports our long-standing commitment to workforce diversity. IBM values diversity in the workplace and encourages nominations of women, minorities and all who contribute to that diversity.
Eligibility Requirements- Students must be nominated by a faculty member. They must be enrolled full-time in a college or university Ph.D. program, and they must have completed at least one year of study in their doctoral program at the time of their nomination. (Eligibility in Europe and Russia is described below.) Students from U.S. embargoed countries are not eligible for the program. Award Recipients will be selected based on their overall potential for research excellence, the degree to which their technical interests align with those of IBM, and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications and endorsements from their faculty advisor and department head. While students may accept other supplemental fellowships, to be eligible for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award they may not accept a major fellowship in addition to the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship.

Merage American Dream Fellowships- The Merage Foundation for the American Dream offers students who have immigrated to the United States and become U.S. citizens or who hold a Permanent Resident Card the opportunity to compete for Merage Foundation Fellowships. Selected students receive $10,000 per year for two years to pursue their American Dream. Nominees must have a solid academic record, a clear track record of leadership, a commitment to hard work and excellence, creativity and initiative, and consistent ethical behavior. Students nominated should demonstrate a clear set of American Dream objectives and strategies for achieving leadership positions in at least one of the following career areas: business, culture, the arts, science, education, or public service. They must also demonstrate a strong desire to contribute to America.

Applicants must be Immigrant students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States, full-time students with senior class status, and will graduate between the December of their year of application and August of the following year.

Morris K. Udall Foundation - Dissertation Fellowship -
The Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. Dissertation Fellowships are intended to cover both academic and living expenses.
Eligibility Requirements -
Dissertation fellowships are open to scholars in all fields of study whose dissertation topic has significant relevance to U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution. Applicants must be enrolled at a U.S. institution of higher education; U.S. citizens attending universities outside the U.S. are not eligible; The primary focus of dissertation research should be U.S. environmental policy or environmental conflict resolution; It is the Foundation's intent that work conducted during the fellowship year be done in the U.S. Ph.D. candidates who hold a fellowship for the purpose of writing the dissertation during the year preceding or coinciding with the Udall Fellowship are not eligible.

MTV-U Fulbright Program -Up to four awards will be available to pursue projects around an aspect of international contemporary or popular music as a cultural force for expression. Preference will be given to creative projects that are conveyed in a dynamic fashion and are accompanied by a feasible plan. In addition to presenting unique projects on music as a global force for mutual understanding, applicants must submit a Documentation and Outreach Plan describing how they intend to share their activities with their peers during their Fulbright year abroad through mtvU print, broadcast and/or online mediums. The Documentation and Outreach Plan form is available at www.us.fulbrightonline.org, and must be submitted as part of the Fulbright application.
Applicants are encouraged to consider all aspects of the power of music in developing their proposals. Along with the study of music in a specific cultural context, proposals will be considered in other music-related fields including music and social activism, music in learning, music and the community and musical performance.

National Research Council of the National Academies – Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs
The National Research Council (NRC) administers competitive postdoctoral and senior research awards on behalf of 28 U.S. government research agencies with facilities at over 100 locations throughout the U.S. and abroad. Awards are available for Postdoctoral Associates (within 5 years of the doctorate) and Senior Associates (normally 5 years or more beyond the doctorate).

Newberry Library – Fellowships in the Humanities 2009-2010 Fellowships - Eligible fields: Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering Award: The Newberry’s fellowships support humanities research in their collections. These wide-ranging and rich collections document the civilizations of Western Europe and the Americas. These Fellowships provide assistance to researchers who wish to use the Library’s collections, but who cannot finance a visit on their own. Fellows make the Library their research home during their fellowship period and work there full time on the projects for which they have received funding. Fellowships at the Newberry Library are of two types:
Long-Term Fellowships- These awards support research and writing by scholars with a doctorate for periods of six to eleven months, stipends range from $25,500 to $70,000. Applicants for post-doctoral awards must hold the Ph.D. at the time of application.
Deadline: January 11, 2010.
Short-Term Fellowships- Ph.D. candidates and scholars with a doctorate are eligible for this fellowship. These help researchers study specific materials at the Newberry that are not readily available to them elsewhere. Most of these fellowships are for one month, and most are restricted to scholars outside the Chicago area. Stipends start at $1,600 per month.

NSF Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship
The NSF Bridge to the Doctorate fellowship provides a $30,000 yearly stipend, full tuition and fees plus $2K for textbook and lab supply.
Eligibility Requirements - The Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident. Additional the student must have applied or have been accepted to a UTEP STEM graduate program for fall 2009 or spring 2010 and must be fully committed to pursuing a Ph.D. in a STEM field of choice.

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The purpose of this fellowship is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. Each year the Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 and a tuition grant of one-half the tuition cost of the US graduate program attended by the Fellow (up to a maximum of $16,000 per academic year) for up to 2 years of graduate study in the United States.
Eligibility Requirements - You must be a senior in college or a holder of a bachelor’s degree or at present enrolled in a graduate program. The applicant must be a resident alien; i.e., holds a Green Card, or has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen, or is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens.

Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Every year, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards fifty-seven Fellowships of $5,000 each and three Fellowships of $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

All Phi Kappa Phi member or prospective members and who have not earned more than seven (7) semester hours of graduate/professional school credits.

SBS Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowships The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at The Ohio State University has established the SBS Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship Program to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars to enter tenure track faculty positions. The appointments are intended for two years, with re-appointment for the second year contingent upon a successful performance review. The fellowships provide a $40,000 annual stipend, university medical benefits, and some support for travel and research expenses.
Eligibility Requirements -
Applicants must have completed all requirements for a doctoral degree in the social sciences by August 2009. Preference will be given to individuals who are within five years of their degree. Applicants must be committed to an academic career. Applicants must be a citizen of the United States.

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship - This program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion. It provides full tuition and educational related fees, books and health insurance allowance plus a yearly stipend ranging from 25,000 - 41,000.

United Negro College Fund (UNCF)- Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships- The United Negro College Fund (UNCF)-Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships are intended to support African-American graduate students as they complete coursework, conduct research, and prepare the dissertation required for the doctoral degree in the biomedically relevant life or physical sciences. At least 12 Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowship awards will be made in 2010. Each award is up to a maximum of $52,000 and consists of a fellowship stipend of up to $42,000 for the award recipient and a research grant of up to $10,000. For administrative purposes, the awards will be made to the institution with which each award recipient is affiliated. Only institutions in the United States are eligible. As the awards are intended to be used to support graduate student stipends and research, no part of the awards may be used for indirect costs. Awards begin no earlier than September 1, 2010. The fellowship stipend of up to $42,000 is intended to cover a minimum of 12 months up to a maximum of 24 months of fellowship tenure. A maximum of $30,000 may be received per 12-month period. Applicants must be engaged in dissertation research and within 1 to 3 years of receiving the degree. All qualifying exams for candidacy for the degree must have been successfully completed before an award can be disbursed. Award recipients will be known as UNCF-Merck Graduate Fellows. Each fellow will be mentored by a Merck scientist. As part of the award, each fellow will be expected to make regular contact with his/her Merck mentor. Each fellow is also expected to present a progress report of his/her research results in the last half of their fellowship tenure at a Merck research facility. The cost of this visit will be underwritten by Merck and Co., Inc. A 2-page summary of research results must be submitted to UNCF at the end of the fellowship tenure. Each fellow is expected to notify UNCF upon receipt of his/her doctorate degree.

U.S. Department of Defense National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship- The Department of Defense (DoD) awards a three-year graduate fellowship to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering who will pursue a doctoral degree. Students can receive annual stipend of $30,500 in the first year, $31,000 in the second and $31,500 in the third year, full tuition and all mandatory fees plus up to $1,000 a year for health insurance coverage.
Eligibility Requirements -
Felllowship Program is open only to applicantswho are citizens or nationals of the United States. Students are required to enroll at a U.S. institution in a full-time program leading to doctoral degree in their discipline of study.

U.S Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship- The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing a Ph.D. in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. The fellowship provides a $32,400 annual stipend, full tuition and required fees and a $1,000 academic allowance. The fellowship is limited to 4 years and must be renewed each year.
Eligibility Requirements - Students must be planning full-time, uninterrupted study toward a Ph.D. degree at a U.S. university and must be either U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.

U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration Harriet G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program- The Harriet G. Jenkins Predoctoral Fellowship Program (JPFP) increases the number of graduate degrees awarded to underrepresented persons (women, minorities, and/or persons with disabilities) participating in the STEM workforce. Fellowship tenure is a maximum three years for individuals pursuing a doctorate and/or master's degree in NASA-related fields, for example; Aeronautics/Aerospace, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, etc. The annual stipends for students pursuing doctoral degrees start at $24,000 and $18,000 for masters-level fellows. Annual tuition offsets are $8,500 per year for all fellows.
Eligibility Requirements -
Open to U.S. citizens only and the student must be a member of an underrepresented group, which includes women, ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline.

Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women's Studies - The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women's Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional or cultural boundaries. Seven fellowships are awarded each year in the amount of $3,000 for dissertation-related connections, such as books, travel, microfilming and computer sciences. These fellowships were designed to support the final year of dissertation writing for PhD candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.
Eligibility Requirements - Students must be enrolled in a graduate school in the United States, have completed all pre-dissertation requirements and must be writing on issues related to women's studies.
