Joe Natoli is the University of Miami’s senior vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer.

Natoli manages the functions of accounting and finance, human resources and employee benefits, information technology, procurement, risk management, real estate, planning and construction, buildings and grounds, and operations and maintenance.

Since joining the University in 2006, Natoli has been responsible for planning the Miami Hurricane’s football team move to Dolphin Stadium, the purchase of the former Cedars Medical Center (now the University of Miami Hospital) and significant changes in employee benefit offerings.

Prior to joining the University, Natoli spent 30 years with Knight Ridder, Inc., at the time, the nation’s second largest newspaper company, where he was chairman and publisher of the company’s largest newspapers, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. He previously served as president and publisher of the San Jose Mercury News, and president of The Miami Herald

He joined the University in September, 2006 following the purchase of Knight Ridder by The McClatchy Company and subsequent divestiture of The Inquirer and Daily News.  Most of his newspaper career was spent in Miami, on the Knight Ridder corporate staff and at The Miami Herald, where positions held included controller, vice president of operations, general manager and president. 

He is a graduate of the University of South Florida and earned an MBA from Nova (now Nova-Southeastern) University. He is a CPA, on retired status. 

Natoli is a member of the Orange Bowl Committee and serves on the boards of the United Way of Miami-Dade County and the Community Advisory Board of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.  He has chaired or co-chaired community-wide United Way campaigns in Miami-Dade County, Silicon Valley (San Jose) and Southeastern Pennsylvania (Philadelphia).  He is a member of the board of directors of Perry Ellis International, a publically-traded, leading designer, distributor and licensor of apparel for men and women. 

Past honors include Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year by the Silicon Valley Philanthropy Association, Humanitarian Award by the South Florida Epilepsy Foundation, Business School Alumni of the Year by the University of South Florida, Award of Excellence by the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and Special Achievement in Business by the National Italian-American Foundation.

He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Joey and Danielle, and one dog, Gizmo.
