 Primary Care

Most primary care services are provided free of charge. You do not need to have the Health Center sponsored insurance plan to be eligible for these services. Although appointments are offered and can be made by calling 305-284-9100, most students prefer to drop-in for their urgent care needs. Peak times are Mondays all day, and all afternoons (especially Fridays). Wait times are shorter early in the day. Students with chronic medical conditions are encouraged to come to the Health Center to meet and get to know one of our primary care providers.

 Women's Health

Women’s Health visits are offered to provide contraception counseling, sexual health counseling,  S.T.D. screening, and an annual gynecologic exam or “pap” test if indicated. Although many women associate their annual visit with a pelvic exam or pap test (screening for cervical cancer), an annual pap test is not necessary or appropriate for all women.

Pap test screening should begin three years after the onset of sexual activity, but no later than age 21. These recommendations are based on the observation that pap test abnormalities due to HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) are common during the two years after the initiation of vaginal intercourse, but frequently regress without intervention. Although it is generally recommended that women under the age of 30  receive annual follow up pap tests, the American Cancer Society recommends every other year testing for average risk women if liquid based testing is performed and all prior tests have been normal. This may become the standard of care in the future.

Although a pap test may not be necessary, sexually active young women should have annual screening for Chlamydia and possibly for other sexually transmitted diseases. This testing can be performed either as part of the gynecologic or pelvic examination or from a urine specimen if pap testing is not necessary.

Contraception counseling during the women’s health visit will include a review of contraception options, on-going assessment of risk for complications from hormonal contraception (“the pill”, others) and evaluation of response to previously prescribed contraception.

Although you will need to receive the appropriate annual assessment and screening to receive on-going contraception prescriptions, you will not be required to have a pap test prior to starting hormonal contraception. Initiation of hormonal contraception is offered on a drop-in basis or by appointment, and if needed an annual Women’s Health Visit can be scheduled at a later date.  Refills of contraception may be available by phone if appropriate follow up has been performed or is scheduled for the near future.

When you call to schedule your annual Women’s Health visit, you may specify whether you need a pap test based on the criteria above. If you are not sure, the need for a pap test can be assessed at the time of the appointment. To schedule an appointment or for additional information please call (305) 284-9100.

An annual Women's Health Clinic visit is offered for no charge to students with the Health Center sponsored insurance plan. Women's Health visits ("pap" tests) for those without the Health Center sponsored insurance plan are $95.00 for liquid based tests, which must be paid prior to the visit. Women's Health visits without a "pap" test are $65.00. In addition to scheduled visits, exams are often provided on a drop in basis during less busy times (mornings, especially mid-week). Other Women's Health services include emergency contraception, S.T.D. screening, pregnancy testing and evaluation of breast problems.

 Orthopedics and Sports Medicine

Although most orthopedic injuries can be treated by our primary care staff, students with complex musculo-skeletal problems can be evaluated and treated by an orthopedist who is available at the Health Center on Tuesday afternoons. Appointments are available by calling 305-284-9100. For students with the Health Center sponsored insurance plan, the charges are billed directly to the insurance company. For others, a visit fee of $75.00 fee must be paid prior to the visit.

 Allergy Injections

Students who have been evaluated by an allergist and have previously received immunotherapy (allergy shots) can receive their injections at the Health Center. Charges for allergy injections are $15.00, and are payable at the time of the visit. Serum must be mailed or delivered to the Health Center.

 Specialty Care / Referrals

Referrals to specialists are provided when appropriate. Although referrals are not required under the United Healthcare policy, we encourage you to visit the Health Center prior to seeking specialty care in order to receive coordinated care and to limit your out of pocket expenses and deductibles. Students with the Health Center sponsored insurance may locate participating specialists on the United Healthcare website.

 Lab / X-Ray

Routine x-rays and other laboratory tests are available at reasonable charges that are often less than those at nearby facilities. For students with the Health Center sponsored insurance plan, these charges are billed directly to the insurance company.

 Travel Medicine

International travel is fun and exciting, but it is also important to stay healthy while you are abroad.  Many diseases that are not found in the United States are found in other areas of the world, which can place a traveler at risk.  Immunizations, malaria prophylaxis, antibiotics for travelers' diarrhea, as well as travel advice specific for your travel destination and activities are available from the Health Center for reasonable charges

Students planning international travel should schedule a travel medicine appointment at the Health Center at least 6 weeks prior to their scheduled departure.  Available vaccines include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, polio, meningococcal, diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis, varicella (chicken pox), MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) and influenza (flu).  Please call (305) 284-9100 to schedule your Travel Medicine visit. You will be asked to complete a travel questionnaire prior to your appointment. Please be sure to bring your travel itinerary and vaccination records to the appointment.  Referring to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) travel site will also better prepare you for the travel medicine appointment. Students with the Health Center sponsored insurance are encouraged to review their travel benefits prior to their departure.
