General Information

 Eligibility/Summer Access

You are not required to have the University sponsored health insurance plan in order to utilize the services of the Student Health Center.

During the Fall and Spring semesters, all full-time undergraduate (12 or more credit hours), full-time graduate (9 or more credit hours or otherwise considered full-time) and full-time day law students are eligible for care at the Health Center. The University fee which allows access to the Health Center , Counseling Center, and the University Center is mandatory and is included in tuition and fees for these students. Part time students are not routinely charged this fee and must pay the Health Care fee to gain access to the Health Center.

During the summer sessions the University fee is mandatory and is automatically added to tuition for students enrolled for 5 or more credit hours. Students who are enrolled for fewer than five credit hours during the summer must request that this fee be charged to gain access to the Student Health Center.

Students who are not enrolled for the current semester but intend to enroll for the next semester and graduating seniors who want access to the Health Center for  the first Summer session can pay the Health Care Fee in order to gain access to the Health Center.

These fees are significantly less than the cost of obtaining care at an outside facility. The University Fee can be paid at the Student Health Service or at the Cashier's office located in the Ashe building-1 st Floor. The Health Center Fee can only be paid at the Student Health Center. Please understand that access to our services can not be provided without paying the appropriate fee.

Medical students may receive care at the Student Health Center on a fee-for-service basis. Fee-for-service charges can be paid for with credit card, cash or Cane Card at the time of service.

International students who are no longer enrolled at the University but remain in the United States completing Optional Practical Training may still be insured under the Student Insurance policy if they originally purchased a plan that continues beyond the completion of their studies. To verify the termination date of your insurance plan please call (800) 436-7709 or log on to www.myuhc.com. Although insurance coverage may continue during OPT training, access to the Student Health Service is limited to enrolled students. Expenses incurred off-campus will be subject to deductibles, co-payments and co-insurance. Please review the United Healthcare schedule of benefits for information on benefits, exclusions and limitations of coverage or contact the Student Health Service at studenthealth@miami.edu for additional information.

How do I decide whether to accept the Student Health Service sponsored Insurance or to choose another policy?

Should I drop-in or make an appointment?

Most students choose to be seen on a drop in basis. Wait times vary, but most students are seen within 30 minutes. Waits may be longer during busy times, or if an emergency occurs. Peak times are mid-day and late afternoon, especially on Mondays and Fridays.

To minimize your wait:

1. Arrive early in the morning.

2. Make an appointment

3. Provide front desk, and triage staff with as much information as possible. Some requests can be accommodated without having to wait to see a provider.

Which provider will I see?

Students are triaged to the appropriate provider based on their presenting complaints or clinical condition. Any student can request any provider; waits may be longer if you request a specific provider. Students with frequent or chronic medical problems are encouraged to choose a specific provider for primary care. Appointments are the best way to assure continuity of care.

Will I be charged for my visit?

There is no charge for most routine visits. There are charges for visits to specialty clinics such as orthopedics and women's health, for routine physical exams, and for procedures such as EKG's, X-rays, allergy shots, and freezing of warts. Some of these charges are covered by the Health Center sponsored Insurance Plan, and will be billed directly to the insurance company. They may also be covered by outside insurance plans, receipts will be provided to allow filing of claims, if appropriate. Payment methods include cash, check, 'cane card, MasterCard and VISA. For more information, please ask front desk staff.

Where is the Pharmacy?

The Pharmacy is located on the second floor, and can fill prescriptions written by any licensed provider. Costs for prescriptions are often lower than those at local drug stores. Most insurance plans are accepted. The pharmacy also sells vitamins, nutritional supplements, and non-prescription medications at reasonable prices. Payment methods include cash, check, Cane card, MasterCard, and VISA.

Do I need to come to the Health Center for prescription refills or referrals?

After your initial visit, your provider may be able to refill your medication, or issue a referral without a visit to the Health Center. You may leave a message by dialing 305-284-9100 option 4. You will be informed if a visit is required.

 Class Excuse Policy

If a student is absent from class for health reasons, it is the student's responsibility to discuss this directly with the faculty member. The Student Health Service does not issue class excuses. Students may sign a written release of information form to allow professors to verify that the student was seen at the Student Health Service on a specific date, or during a designated period of time.

If a student is hospitalized, suffers from a prolonged illness or is recovering from a serious injury, the Student Health Service will communicate with the appropriate dean's office after obtaining permission from the student.
