The Police Officer Application Process

Because of this commitment to the excellence of its police officers, extensive efforts have been undertaken to make this process an efficient and effective tool to obtain the best possible candidates to work at the University of Miami.
The Recruitment and Selection Process for police officers at the University of Miami Police Department occurs in several phases. Each phase has distinctive activities and functions that must occur in order to successfully recruit and select quality police officers for the University. Below is a breakdown of each phase:
- Application Process – online application, prescreen forms, 2nd application package
- Initial Standards Testing – TABE, FBAT, Physical Ability
- Credit, Traffic, Criminal Checks
- Initial Interview
- POST Exam
- Suitability Testing – Medical, psychological and polygraph exams
- In-Depth Background – education and employment verification; interviews with neighbors, family members, character references, and employers; address verification; out-of-state checks (if applicable); verification of application with other agencies; civil court history check; training academy verification
- Final Interview
The entire process lasts approximately 3 to 6 months (from Initial Standards Testing dates) and varies according to applicant employment and residence history. We do not recommend applicants to take any of these exams independently, as these exam scores will not be accepted.
