'Canes Resource Officer (CRO) program
The ‘Canes Resource Officer (CRO) program is a relatively new UM Police initiative that is aimed at promoting both formal and informal interaction between UM Police Officers and the University community, particularly students. Essentially, the program assigns one UM Police Officer to one section of campus in addition to several student organizations. Each Officer is responsible for conducting proactive crime prevention initiatives, being highly visible in his or her section and being known amongst the members of the student groups he/ she is responsible for. Initiatives can range from informal discussions with students, to presentations, to contacting victims of crimes, to sting operations aimed at catching thieves in the act.
The UM Police Department uses a community policing model of law enforcement. Therefore, the ultimate goal of the ‘Canes Resource Officer (CRO) program is to have University Police Officers and students personally know each other, or at the very least, recognize each other. The stronger the personal and professional relationship between students and police, the safer and stronger our community is in taking a stand against crime.
