Holiday Hope Tree - November 12 - December 7, 2007
Make a child's holiday season brighter this year by donating a toy to UM's annual Holiday Hope Tree! The Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development is once again sponsoring the Annual Holiday Hope Tree. This program provides holiday gifts for underprivileged children in the Miami community. Beginning on November 12th 2007, students, faculty and staff can pick up an angel from the tree located at the University Center Information Desk on the first floor of the Whitten University Center. Individuals or groups who pick up one of the angels are asked to commit to returning a new, unwrapped gift to the Information Desk no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, December 7, 2007. Many of the angels on the tree will have specific gift requests, and we ask that you help by purchasing the specific or age-appropriate gift requested on the angel.

The Annual Holiday Hope Tree partners with several local community agencies to help underprivileged children in the Miami-Dade area have a brighter holiday season, including Head Start and the Salvation Army. In 2006, over 300 gifts were collected for 6 different local community agencies and were distributed to underprivileged children in Miami-Dade. Some of these agencies include the Salvation Army, The CHARLEE Program, and several others.

Graduation Pledge Alliance (GPA)

The University of Miami Graduation Pledge

"I _____________ pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work."

Each year well over a million students enter the work force. Think of the impact on our society if even a significant minority of applicants and job holders inquired about or attempted to change the ethical practices of their potential or current employers. Or what if applicants turned down jobs and told their potential employers the ethical reasons why they did so? And shouldn't a job represent more than just a paycheck? Shouldn't it be a place where one can feel good about his/her own assignments and the general practices of the company?

Students who take the pledge at the University of Miami will be supplied with a green ribbon pen to wear at graduation, and will receive a pledge card to keep in your wallet to remind you of the pledge.

If you are a graduating senior and would like to take part in this commitment, please contact the Butler Center at 305-284-GIVE or stop by UC 240.
