UM's 19TH FESTIVAL MIAMI TO BRING HARMONY TO SOUTH FLORIDA

 

Coral Gables, FL - The University of Miami School of Music will celebrate Festival Miami's 19th season with 28 performances, all packed into five spectacular weeks. This year's concert series will delight South Florida's cultural community with an extensive selection of concerts ranging from classical music to jazz to Broadway and even Ballet. The festival will begin on September 21 and continue virtually non-stop through October 26, 2002.

 

The UM Symphony Orchestra, conductor Thomas Sleeper and guest artist, Italian piano virtuoso, Pietro de Maria will open the 2002 concert series with a performance of the Saint-Saens Piano Symphony in G Minor. The evening concert will also feature the world premiere of John Van der Slice's Specters.

 

:Festival Miami's consistent growth as a unique major festival in Southeast Florida is a manifestation of our strategic planning," said William Hipp, dean of UM's School of Music and Festival Miami's founder. "There is simply no comparable university-based festival of this scope anywhere else. The festival's outstanding success to date has resulted in both national and international recognition and support."

 

Highlights of this year's festival include the North American Premiere of the fully staged ballet entitled Cecilia Valdes, A Cuban Ballet.  A first for Festival Miami, the remake of this popular Cuban Zarzuela into a ballet will feature Rosario Suarez as the prima ballerina and choreographer, Marlene Urbay, and the Florida Chamber Orchestra. Please note: this event will be held at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. Making its U.S. premiere will be Soledad. Direct from Belgium, this dynamic quintet of world-class musicians will perform Tango Nuevo with an exhilarating blend of violin, piano, guitar, double bass and accordion. Festival Miami will also serve as the 2002 season opener for the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Along with musical director and conductor Manuel Ochoa, the Miami Symphony Orchestra will perform the Florida premiere of Concierto de Malaga by Celedonio Romero with special guest guitarist Angel Romero and the world premiere of Concierto de Cubano Barroco by Jose Raul Bernardo commissioned for the Miami Symphony Orchestra.

 

Additional highlights of this year's festival include a concert by legendary saxophonist James Moody joining Downbeat Magazine's award-winning UM Concert Jazz Band performing the Many Moods of Jazz. New to Festival Miami this year will be the "Extreme Strings" mini-festival featuring three concerts, workshops and master classes all open to the public. The "Extreme Strings" mini-festival will culminate with a performance by the widely acclaimed Turtle Island String Quartet. Also new to this year's concert series will be "Festival Brazil" featuring three performances each highlighting a different type of music by renowned Brazilian artists Eliane Elias, Luiz Fernando Benedini and the Assad Brothers.

 

Festival Miami will top off the 2002 season with the University of Miami Symphony Orchestra, conductor Thomas Sleeper and special guest artist and international prize-winning pianist Sergei Babayan, performing the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor.

 

All Festival Miami events will be held in the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall on UM's Coral Gables campus, unless otherwise noted. Ticket prices range from $8 to $25 and $40 for opening and closing night performances and receptions. Tickets may be purchased directly from the Festival Miami ticket office or through Ticketmaster. Distinguished pianist, Velia Yedra presents a concert of Cuban classics featuring violinist, Bogdan Chruszcz and special guest artists in an evening of music and dance with works by Amadeo Roldan, A. Garcia Caturla, and Ernesto Lecuona. Presented in collaboration with the University of Miami Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies.

Thursday, September 26, 8:00 p.m. - Beethoven, Brahms, Bruch and Debussy

Jules Eskin, principal cellist of the Boston Symphony joins Ethan Sloane, clarinetist, and UM's own celebrated pianist, Paul Posnak in a program of chamber music: Beethoven?s Trio, Op. 11; Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Cello and Piano Op. 83, by Max Bruch; Sonata for Cello and Piano by Claude Debussy; and Trio, Op. 114, by Johannes Brahms.

Friday, September 27, 8:00 p.m. - Extreme Strings Part I: Celtic, Country, and Jazz

Three extreme violin styles in one concert! James Kelly, one of the greatest Irish fiddlers alive today with 18 recordings to his credit; Buddy Spicher, one of today's most widely recorded country fiddlers who is currently touring with Crystal Gale; and Matt Glaser, co-author of the book Jazz Violin with legendary jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, who has appeared on over 30 recordings.

Festival Miami's salute to Extreme Stings culminates with the widely acclaimed and innovative Turtle Island String Quartet featuring their brilliant "Art of the Groove" program. To the TISQ's unique arrangements of works by composers such as Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck, Thelonius Monk, Pat Metheny, Vivaldi, Ravel and Frank Zappa , TISQ adds to their own compositions integrating jazz, western classical, American fiddle styles, World Beat, Afro-Cuban, and Indian classical music.

A Festival favorite, UM's resident string quartet featuring Glen Basham and Scott Flavin, violins; Pamela McConnell, viola; and Ross Harbaugh, cello, performs works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky as well as the Florida premiere of McConnell's arrangement of Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals.

Wednesday, October 2, 8:00 p.m. - Festival Brazil Part I: Jazz Great Eliane Elias with the University of Miami Jazz Vocal - 1 Ensemble

Grammy nominated pianist and vocalist, Eliane Elias joins the award winning University of Miami Jazz Vocal-1 Ensemble directed by Larry Lapin. Hailed as one of the major jazz pianists of our time, Elias has more than 12 recordings to her credit and is widely considered one of the great interpreters of the music of Jobim. A native of Brazil, tonight's concert kicks off Festival Miami's tribute to Brazilian artists and composers.

Sunday October 6, 3:00 p.m. - North American Premiere: "Cecilia Valdes, Ballet!"

Location: The Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W. Flagler Street, Miami.

Performed for the first time in the United States as a ballet, this famed Cuban zarzuela, based on the novel by Cirilio Villaverde, debuts in Miami for two days only as a focal point of Festival Miami. The legendary Cecilia Valdes depicts life in colonioal Cuba in the 1800s by illustrating the interconnectedness of the lives of Spanish landlords and their slaves. A compelling story of the passion and tragedy of misguided love, the work is a literary masterpiece and translates as a powerful, fully-stages ballet. Using the Score by Cuban composer Gonzalo Roig, and a re-orchestration by Jose Ramon Urbay, the ballet will be conducted by world-renowned orchestra director, Marlene Urbay and choreographed by Rosario "Charin" Suarez.

Direct from Mexico, Maria Diez-Canedo (traverso and Flauta de pico), Gabriela Villa (viola da gamba), Eloy Cruz (guitarra barroca and tiorba) and Eunice Padilla (clavecin), of La Fontegara are dedicated to the performance of Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococco music on replicas of original period instruments.
