University of Miami School of Communication Rededicates Bill Cosford Cinema
Community gem to show free Sunday films through the end of November

CORAL GABLES, FL – The University of Miami School of Communication will rededicate the Bill Cosford Cinema, a state-of-the-art theater used for instructional and public exhibition programs on the University’s Coral Gables campus.

On Thursday, October 27, there will be a reception and free screening of the 1952 classic film Singin’ in the Rain. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Seating is limited, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Cinema, recently named Best Movie Theater by New Times, was named for Bill Cosford 10 years ago. Cosford was a popular adjunct professor in the School of Communication’s motion pictures program, who served as film critic and arts writer for the Miami Herald from 1973 until his untimely death from pneumonia in 1994 at age 47. He was a champion for the Beaumont Cinema (the theater’s former name) operating as a fully operational art film house for the public, something he thought the area desperately needed.

In time for the rededication, the Cosford Cinema has a new sound system, Dolby Surround Sound 5.1 digital, and a new Norelco projector that allows projection of both 35 mm and 70 mm films.

The re-dedication will continue throughout November, as the Cinema will show free Sunday 3 p.m. screenings of films Cosford loved: November 6 Jurassic Park, November 13 Schindler’s List, November 20 Blade Runner (Director’s Cut), and November 27 Howard’s End.

The Bill Cosford Cinema is located on the second floor of the Memorial Building. Tickets are $4 for UM employees with ID and $6 for the general public. Free for students. For movie times, call 305-284-4861.
