Miami-Dade Urban Debate League Argues its Way to a New Future
WHAT: Twelve Miami-Dade public high schools and two middle schools will participate in a debate tournament hosted by the Miami-Dade Urban Debate League (MDUDL). The topic of debate: whether or not the United States federal government should substantially decrease its authority either to detain without charge or to search without probable cause. Monthly tournaments are made possible for students through community donations and volunteers. Scheduled to speak are University of Miami Student Body President, Pete Mackey. During the lunch break, University of Miami school mascot, Sebastian the ibis, will make an appearance.
WHEN: Saturday, April 22, from noon until 1 p.m.

University of Miami Coral Gables campus
WHY: A number of these students come from at-risk backgrounds, and their participation in team policy debate helps them become more engaged in the academic classroom.
