All international students must purchase the medical insurance offered through the University of Miami at the time of registration unless they provide proof of agency or government sponsor coverage that has been reviewed and approved by the University Student Health Center prior to registration. Please note that this coverage must be of equal or greater value than the medical insurance provided by the University and must include those areas that are part of the University's medical insurance policy, such as maternity benefits, mental health, HIV/AIDS, and substance abuse. You must present a copy of the policy information in English. Only policies approved by the Student Health Service will be accepted. Students in J-1 status are required to purchase insurance for their dependents. Failure to do so is a violation of your non immigrant status.

All international students are required to enroll in the University sponsored health insurance program. International students with alternative health insurance coverage may request a fee waiver by arranging for their alternative insurance provider to complete an International Student Insurance Waiver Request form to the Student Health Service. The alternative insurance must meet all of the guidelines specified in the Waiver Request form. Deadlines to submit the waiver requests are September 15 for the Fall semester and February 15 for the Spring semester. The 2006-2007 annual premium for international undergraduate students is $1,015. The 2006-2007 annual premium for international graduate students is $1,250. Optional coverage for dependents, club sports and catastrophic coverage are available as described in the brochure.  These charges are paid directly to the insurance agent. Inquiries should be directed to IFS at 800-356-1235.

It is recommended that you have any necessary dental work completed prior to coming, as this tends to be expensive in the United States. It is also recommended that you bring with you an extra pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses and your prescription. If you take regular medications, it is advised that you bring a large enough supply to cover your intended stay in the United States. Sometimes these medications are not available and therefore this may affect your health status.
