Change of Status to F-1

> Change of Educational Level

In order to change educational levels at the University of Miami (i.e., from Intensive English to Bachelor’s program, from Bachelor’s to Master’s program, or from Master’s to Ph.D. program), you must first apply for admission and be admitted to another degree program at UM.  Once you have been admitted to another degree program, the academic department in which you wish to pursue your new educational level will notify International Admission of your admission to the program.

After you have submitted a new bank or sponsorship letter to International Admission for your next educational program, International Admission will then submit a Request to Change Educational Level to International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), and ISSS will issue a new Form I-20 for the change of educational level.  ISSS will notify you to collect the new Form I-20 from the department and will activate your educational level once you have enrolled for classes at the new educational level.

> Change of Major

Once your new major is confirmed in student records, you will need a new SEVIS I-20 from ISSS. Bring your old Form I-20 and fill out an application for a travel I-20 (available at ISSS). Please indicate your new major on the application.

> Transfer to Another School

If you plan to transfer from the University of Miami to another school, you must use this form to notify International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) of your intent to transfer.  Upon receipt of this form, we will update your SEVIS record, thereby giving the new school access to your record.

You may be applying to many schools, but your SEVIS record can only be transferred to ONE school.  Once we transfer your record out, we CANNOT retrieve it after the release date, and you will have to contact the school you requested that it be transferred to.  Your transfer release date will be the end of the current semester unless otherwise requested, provided you have a valid reason.
