International Observership Program

The Department of International Student and Scholar Services at the University of Miami oversees the University's International Observership Program for foreign nationals. This program allows University of Miami departments to host international visitors to observe research, teaching and other departmental activities for a limited period of time. The maximum duration for an International Observership Program at the University of Miami is three months (six months for pre-degree participants in the Harrington Programs). Observerships cannot be extended beyond the maximum program duration listed above. Upon the expiration date of an observership, the participant must return his University of Miami identification badge to his or her hosting department and depart from the University.

For your convenience and information, ISSS has created manuals geared specifically towards explaining to UM academic departments the various procedures for bringing an international observer to your department and hosting him or her here. If your department is located at the Coral Gables campus or the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science campus, please look at the International Observership Policy and Procedure Manual for Coral Gables and RSMAS. If your department is located on the Miller School of Medicine campus, please look at the International Observership Policy and Procedure Manual for the Miller School of Medicine.

Persons interested in participating in the International Observership Program are instructed to directly contact the department they wish to observe with for information on whether the respective department has any openings for observers and how to apply for an observership. Please note that it is up to each individual department to decide whether to invite any person to participate in the International Observership Program, to inform prospective observers on the appropriate steps to take in order to become an observer, and to decide whether to extend an observership. Please keep in mind that an observership program cannot be extended beyond the maximum program duration of three months (six months for pre-degree participants in the Harrington Programs).
