Academic Resources

Academic Resource Center
Centrally located in the University Center (UC), ARC offers resources for students, parents and employees to manage success and advance potential. The primary resources are:

  • peer & online tutoring
  • UMX, "The Ultimate UM Experience"
  • academic success counseling
  • supplemental instruction
  • academic resource workshops
  • accessibility resources
  • faculty support
  • resources for parents

Writing Center
The center's professional and friendly staff of faculty and graduate students work with students in one-to-one consultations on all stages of the writing process: from note-taking and pre-writing to revision strategies and proofreading techniques. Through its teaching environment, the Writing Center helps students improve their writing and proofread/edit their own papers. Rather than "fixing" papers, they focus on helping students improve as writers.

Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate research at UM is available to the entire student body. Our students are encouraged to participate in research long before entering graduate school in order to try out possible future careers today. Undergraduates work alongside faculty members serving as mentors, and learn the entire process of research. Students are taught the basics of grant applications, acquisitions and project design. Our students not only participate in ongoing cutting-edge research, but also are invited to seminars, training sessions and meetings pertinent to the research project. Research internships are available on the Coral Gables Campus, UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Campus. Opportunities include science, medicine, technology, business, education, communication, the arts, architecture, psychology and more.

Libraries
The Otto G. Richter Library is the general research library and the largest among the University of Miami Libraries. It is a designated depository for U.S. federal documents. The research resources include a strong Floridiana collection and the Cuban and Caribbean collections. Richter Library holdings are represented in IBIS, its online public access catalog. UM's branch libraries include the Albert Pick Music Library, Architecture Library, Math Library and the Judi Prokop Newman Information Resource Center (Business Library). Other libraries are the Rosenstiel School of Marine Science Library, Law Library and the Louis Calder Medical Library.

Course Offerings
Anyone can browse courses several terms in advance on myUM, the university portal. Search by department, terms, course number, level, type or even by open courses. Search results will include a course description, schedule, location, status (open/closed), instructor and total number of seats plus how many filled.
