The Honors Program in Medicine (HPM) is offered to mature high school seniors with strong academic ability and achievement who seek careers in medicine or medical science. Students can earn both a Bachelor of Science (BS) and a Doctor of Medicine Degree (MD) in 7 or 8 years.
Students undergo a highly selective screening process and are admitted simultaneously to the College of Arts and Sciences to the School of Medicine. Accepted students are assured of a place in medical school after 3 or 4 calendar years of undergraduate work.
Applicants to the Honors Program in Medicine must be US citizens or permanent residents of the United States with an alien registration receipt card in their possession at the time of application. Residents of any state may apply. Only students who are in their last year of high school are considered and students who have graduated from high school are ineligible to apply.
To be considered students must:

have a combined SAT1 score of 1400 (combined Math and Critical Reading scores) or an ACT score of 32 and an unweighted GPA of 3.75

rank in the top 5 percent of their high school graduating class
-
meet the SAT II score requirement of at least 600 in Math, and one science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
-
have completed eight semesters of English and mathematics and two semesters each of biology and chemistry by the time they graduate from high school.

complete the regular two-part Application for Admission to the University of Miami. We strongly recommend students submit their applications for general admission by November 1 of their senior year in high school.

complete a supplemental application form for the Honors Program in Medicine

Medical Scholars Program
The Medical Scholars Program (MSP) is a 7-year BS/MD program. Admission to the MSP program assures students of a place in the freshman class of the University of Miami School of Medicine after completing their third year of undergraduate study, provided they meet the program requirements. Students who enter the University directly from high school with an SAT 1 score of 1350 (ACT 30) and who achieve a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.7 may be selected for the Medical Scholars Program at the end of their fourth continuous semester of undergraduate work. If accepted to the Program, students are assured of a place in medical school at the end of their third calendar year of undergraduate work provided they have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7, a science GPA of at least 3.7, a composite MCAT score of 26, and can demonstrate satisfactory completion of at least two socialization elements. Undergraduate Academic Scholarships - for students admitted to either of these programs:
Students who qualify and participate in any of our accelerated medical programs are typically candidates for our undergraduate academic scholarships. These scholarships are awarded only to incoming students and are only applicable to the undergraduate portion of a student’s educational career.

Honors Program in Marine Geology

The five-year B.S./M.S. degree in Marine Geology allows exceptional students to pursue an accelerated program in the undergraduate Geological Sciences and graduate Marine Geology & Geophysics programs. The degree consists of an undergraduate Bachelor of Sciences degree in Geological Sciences from the College of Arts & Sciences, combined with a graduate Master of Science degree from the Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, one of the country’s leading oceanographic institutions.
Undergraduates have the opportunity to work with top-level research scientists in Geology and Marine Geology, conducting intensive field-study and laboratory work of Earth processes and Earth history. By spring of their junior year, students will be initiating an undergraduate thesis as preparation for the M.S. In their senior year, students will increase the focus on graduate courses and work closely with their graduate faculty member.
Students may also be eligible for an undergraduate program in Privileged Studies, designed for students who enter UM with advanced knowledge in several disciplines. Privileged Studies provides flexibility in designing a course of study without the limitations of the conventional course distribution requirements.
To be considered students must:
- be in top 10 percent of high school graduating class
- have an SAT1 composite score of 1360 or an ACT score of 31 and a weighted GPA of 3.75
- submit to the Office of Admission application for admission, high school transcript, official SAT1 or ACT scores, the dual honors Program Supplemental Application, including the Life Experiences and Personal History Essay sections. We strongly recommend students submit their applications for general admission by November 1 of their senior year in high school.
- include a counselor recommendation, three letters of recommendation from teachers in support of your application to the Dual honors Program and personal statement
SAT II scores are not required for this program.

Fellows in Latin American Studies (FILAS)

This innovative five-year, dual B.A./M.A. degree in Latin American Studies allows incoming freshmen the opportunity to complete a master’s degree in five years, following a rigorous, efficient, accelerated curriculum. This highly selective group of students will enjoy close faculty mentoring and the opportunity to engage in specialized research projects with faculty.
With its large Latin American population and diverse Latin American connections, Miami provides the ideal setting for Latin American Studies. Students will gain advanced competence in at least one major language of Latin America, intern for one semester in public or private organizations dealing with Latin America and take advanced seminars with UM’s major Latin American scholars and visiting scholars.
In addition, students will receive first-hand experience in their regions of focus by studying abroad. Most study abroad opportunities are for a duration of six months.
To apply, students must:
- have an SAT1 composite score of 1360 or an ACT score of 31 (students applying from abroad must meet an equivalent standard as determined by the Office of International Admission) and a weighted GPA of 3.75
- be in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class
- submit three letters of recommendation from high school teachers
- show clear evidence of commitment to studying Latin America through prior language or area study and a statement of interest
FILAS students receive the following:
- Personalized advising for course-selection and research interests
- Support for identifying appropriate study abroad and internship opportunities
- The chance to compete for financial assistance for study abroad and research projects
- Invitations to regular dinner seminars and special on-campus events related to LAS
- Two Spring Break learning trips during five years at UM. These 10-day adventures introduce students to a major research theme/project in Latin American Studies.
- Example: Fair Trade Coffee Production and Environmental Conservation Policy in Costa Rica: Accompanied by a UM professor, students spend Spring Break touring San Juan, Rio Piedras, rural coffee farms, and the National Biosphere Centre.
- The chance to compete for up to two summers of research credits (with a $1,200 stipend per summer). Under the supervision of a UM professor, students study key issues such as language change and cross-cultural encounters, business cultures, civic participation, and education in Miami’s immigrant communities.
- Pre-acceptance into the Master’s level portion of the program. (*To continue through the Master’s level of the five-year program, students must maintain at least a 3.4 GPA at the University of Miami.)

Fellows Scholarships
Fellows in Latin American Studies receive tuition for their master’s level credits, generally taken in the fifth year of study. They will also be eligible for special FILAS scholarships to offset study abroad costs.

Honors Program in Physical Therapy (HPPT)

The Honors Program in Physical Therapy (HPPT) is offered to high school graduates with high academic ability seeking careers in physical therapy. Students may earn both the Bachelor of Health Science (BHS) and the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degrees in a six-year accelerated program, rather than the customary seven years.
HPPT is a cooperative venture of the School of Nursing and Health Studies and the Miller School of Medicine, with students majoring in Health Sciences. Students pursue an enriched and highly challenging undergraduate curriculum, secure in the knowledge they will have a place in the graduate physical therapy program after successful completion of three years of pre-physical therapy curriculum.
To be considered students must:
- be in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class
- have a minimum SAT1 score of 1360 or an ACT score of 31 and a weighted GPA of 3.75
- complete a supplemental HPPT application by January 15 of their senior year

Honors Program in Exercise Physiology (HPEP)

The Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences offers a 5-year program for promising students majoring in Exercise Physiology. Very highly qualified students are eligible to complete an accelerated 4-year program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology following by one additional year of graduate coursework.
The additional year of study will enable students to complete all requirements leading to a Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology in the School of Education, (M.S. Ed.), in 5 years.

Honors Program in Law

The Honors Program in Law (HPLW) is an exciting new opportunity for students interested in earning a law degree. Through this program, students with high academic ability gain admission to both undergraduate study and to graduate study in the School of Law. Such an achievement eliminates the pressure of applying to law school as a college senior - and gives qualified students the chance to complete both bachelor's and jurist doctorate degrees in just six years.
This innovative program is available to students who complete three years in residence at UM in the College of Arts & Sciences or in the majors of political science or economics in the School of Business Administration.
Requirements for the Honors Program in Law:

90 credits are earned at UM

Admission is provisional to the program at the time of admission to UM undergraduate study. During the applicant's third year, a standard application form is then submitted to the School of Law.

The applicant must be in the top 5% of his/her graduating class and have a minimum SAT score of 1400 (combined Math and Critical Reading scores)

The applicant must take the LSAT and submit a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5
