Safety and Security

Our private Coral Gables campus is in one of the safest suburban enclaves in the United States. For the protection of the entire UM community, safety measures include:

  • All doors to the Residential Colleges are monitored by the Cane Card Access System.  Between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. security assistants monitor the entrance lobbies to all residential buildings.

  • The Residential Colleges are equipped with video cameras that monitor all points of entry 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Smoke detectors, fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm pull boxes, fire extinguishers and emergency fire escape doors are in every building.

  • More than 105 Blue Light Phones are strategically located across campus. Phones are connected directly to the Department of Public Safety and may be used to request an escort, report suspicious activities or get information.

  • Every residential college has professional live in staff on call 24/7 to assist with any crisis or problem that may arise.

  • Each residential college is partnered with an “adopt a cop.” The UM police officer will be a presence in the community and be a resource for educational programs and assist with any potential safety and security concerns.
