Miami Commitment

Miami Commitment Students in our Miami Commitment program will start in an entry-level position, typically on campus, but as they gain skills through their job experience, workshops and other planned activities, they may move to positions with more responsibility on or off-campus. Miami Commitment is designed for the student who is responsible, eager to learn and who wants to work mainly to gain experience to apply toward future professional goals. About 15 to 20 percent of freshmen students are admitted to the program each year.

Senior Lucia Taveras had the opportunity to work with the Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. Taveras worked for the MacroEconomics Data and Statistics Department and Maritime Administration, creating and editing databases, updating information and records and preparing reports. She attended meetings with department heads and enjoyed attending seminars and conventions.

"This was a great experience!" Lucia said. "I was able to acquire real-world, hands-on experience, and network with important people. We were introduced to government leaders, Senators and Representatives, and given tours of Washington. This experience gave me a broader idea of what I can do in the future."

Students accepted into the University of Miami as incoming freshmen and who submit their enrollment deposit by the deadline must complete the Miami Commitment program application by May 16th prior to the start of their freshman year to be considered for the program. Since one of the main tenets of this program is the growth and professional development of the undergraduate over the course of their college career, the Miami Commitment Program is only available to new incoming freshmen.
