Famous Alumni

There are lots of famous people that are proud to be Canes! Some of these include:


David Alan Isaacs ('71)
Producer for Paramount Pictures. He created famed sitcoms, such as, Cheers and Frasier. He also wrote for MASH.



Roy Firestone ('75)
Hosted a successful talk show Up Close on ESPN and now hosts several prime time specials each year on national networks. Sports Illustrated called him "the best interviewer in the business."



Bruce Hornsby ('77)
Singer and musician. Bruce Hornsby and the Range received Grammy Award for Best New Artists in 1987. His band continues to produce hit music.



Gloria Estefan ('78)
Entertainer and producer. Her music is widely known and includes several #1 singles such as "Conga," and "Rhythm is Gonna Get You". Her song "Reach" was the official theme song of the 1996 Summer Olympics.



John Secada ('83)
Singer and Entertainer. He is known as one of the most popular entertainers in the world. His debut album sold more than 4 million copies; he also received a Grammy Award in 1993.



Suzy Kolber ('86)
Reporter for ESPN. She previously worked as an anchor and reporter for Fox Sports. She co-hosted the inaugural Extreme Games on ESPN and ESPN2 in 1995. She also won a local Sports Emmy in 1988 for sportscast production at WTVJ in Miami.



Sylvester Stallone ('99)
One of Hollywood's most popular and highest-paid actors. He first became an international superstar in 1976 after he wrote and starred in Rocky, which won him an Oscar for Best Picture. His huge box office success continues primarily in action films.

Annual Hurricane Events NOT to be MISSED

President's Picnic
In the beginning of the Fall semester, President Shalala invites all new students to her home for a spirit-filled "meet and greet". Buses take the students to the President's Coral Gables home were the lunch takes place. You can meet the president and other administrators while enjoying some great food and tons of Cane Spirit!

Freshman Walk
At a home football game, all the new students are invited to take a traditional walk around the Orange Bowl field.

Hurricane Howl
Hurricane Howl kicks off the Homecoming festivities. Hurricane Howl is a pep rally followed by a concert on the UC patio.

Boat Burning Ceremony
This Homecoming tradition involves the traditional burning of a wooden boat in Lake Osceola. Fireworks are also included to finish the night events.

Miss UM Pageant
Each year UM hosts the Miss UM Pageant. Contestants participate in various categories for the coveted title and crown. Come watch your favorite contestant shine!

Organized Cheer
This homecoming tradition is a way for various groups to showcase their school spirit. The event takes place during Homecoming on the UC patio. It's an event you shouldn?t miss!

Hurricanes Help the Hometown
"Hurricanes help the Hometown" is an annual community volunteering effort that usually takes place around Homecoming. Students volunteer their Saturday to help beautify the community. Students are transported to the site and given t-shirts. It's a great way for students to give something back to the community!

Popular UM Locations

Orange Bowl

Miami's Orange Bowl has been the site of three national championships for the University of Miami football team (1983, 1987, and 1991). The stadium served as the site of the traditional New Year's Day football game until 1996. The University's relationship with the Orange Bowl dates back to January 1, 1935, when the University of Miami played in the first New Year's Day game at the Orange Bowl site. The Hurricanes hold the NCAA record for the longest consecutive home win streak of 58 games set from 1985-1994 in the Orange Bowl.


Convocation Center

The UM Convocation Center, a 7,000+ seat multipurpose entertainment facility is home to concerts, family shows, trade shows, lecture series, university events, Commencement, pep rallies, and sporting events such as hosting University of Miami Men's and Women's basketball teams. Keep your eye out for exciting free events!


The Rathskeller

The Rathskeller, better known as "the Rat", is a popular student meeting place that not only serves great hamburgers, but is also a venue for campus entertainment such as live bands, poetry slams, dance parties, and comedy acts.The Rat also has pool tables, dartboards, multiple TVs, DJ sound system and dance lighting, a 15ft screen, and comfy sofas for you to relax on and enjoy.


Cosford Cinema

The Bill Cosford Cinema is located on the second floor of the Memorial Building. Throughout the semester, various popular movies, sneak previews, and cultural films are shown, all of which are free for students!

 

Stanford Circle

The Stanford Circle, popularly called "The Circle" is located just next to the UC and the Toppel Career Center. There, you can catch a shuttle, meet some friends, or have someone pick you up. It's one of UM's landmarks.

The Fountain

The Fountain is located behind the Otto G. Richter library and Ashe building across from the biology and engineering buildings. The Fountain is a great place to meet friends, catch up on some reading, or catch a shuttle.

The Wellness Center

The Student Wellness Center is located behind the towers, next to the Convocation Center. This is home to the UM gym, but also to many types of exercise classes, massages, personalized wellness services, an indoor track, and a pool. There is always something going on at the Wellness Center! It's a perfect place to meet some friends and work off the "Freshman 15"!

Library

The Otto G. Richter library is located right behind the UC. The bottom floor has computers and printers which are perfect for working on papers between classes. Need a journal article, but don't have time to stop by? Most of the journals available in the library are also available online. During finals, the library is also open 24/7 so you can study all night long. The library offers many services and all the employees are more than happy to make your library experience easier. All you have to do is ask!

The library is also home to "the stacks". These are the upper floors which house the older books. Need a quiet place to study and not be bothered? Then the stacks are perfect for you! There is also wireless internet access in the stacks, so you can check your email from your laptop while you are up there.

The Intramural Field

Better known as the IM field, this large area is home to other intramural activities as well as other campus activities. Each night, you can see various students playing sports, the band practicing, or people just having fun with friends.

The Jerry Herman Ring Theater

Better known as "the Ring" this campus theater is home to several productions a year. Well-known plays and musicals are performed each semester by UM students. Usually UM student admission ranges from $8-$10. "Totally Tuesday" performance admits UM students for free.

Ibis Trail

On the outskirts of campus running alongside Ponce and Alhambra, encircling the campus, there is a paved path called the Ibis Trail. Many UM students and community members walk, run, bike, and walk their dogs on this path. In addition, the "labyrinth" which is located near Lake Osceola and Hecht, is also a famous walking destination.

During the early evening hours many people can be seen running with friends along this 2+ mile Ibis trail. It's a great way to get some exercise and see all of UM's natural beauty!

The Learning Center

Better know as the LC, the Learning Center is the round classroom building located near the Memorial Classrooms. Chances are you will have class or a club meeting in one of these buildings. They resemble lecture halls and are some of the largest classrooms on campus.

The University Center

The UC as it is better known is the heart of campus. Here students can find the food court, The University Credit Union, ATMs, Dry Cleaning Services, Ticketmaster, meeting rooms for campus organizations, the STA travel agency, a computer lab, the Academic Development Center, Student Government, "The Hurricane" newspaper, WVUM, the pool, and C-Store. Students often frequent the couches on the first and second floors to meet friends, catch up on reading, or spend time between classes watching TV. Many events on-campus are publicized here through banners and fliers so keep your eyes peeled for something fun to do as you stroll by. Some of the various stores and locations are mentioned below.

Storm Surge Café

The Storm Surge Cafe in the University Center features comfortable, upholstered couches and chairs creating a casual environment. In the Games Area portion of the Cafe, students will still find billiards, ping-pong tables, and table games.

The café provides food service, computer e-mail stations, a big-screen TV (along with six auxiliary TVs showing a mix of programs), and much more! Outside the StormSurge doors you will find a branch of the University Credit Union, Sbarro's Italian Restaurant, and the C-Store.

When you visit the University Center Games Area, you will find a variety of recreational activities to help pass time between classes. Some activities are free with your Cane Card; others are available at a nominal fee. While at the Games Area, you can enjoy:

Pocket Billiards (Pool)
Table Tennis (Ping-Pong)
Table Soccer (Foosball)
Backgammon, Chess, & Checkers
Food Service and TV Viewing Area
Also located in the Games Area are the pay phones and "house phones"; the vending machines; and a board for posting items wanted to Buy or For Sale.

Post Office

The UM branch of the US Post Office, located just beyond the Bookstore, at the end of the University Center nearest the Library, offers full postal services -- stamps, Express Mail, and Money Orders, as well as rental PO Boxes (resident students ordinarily will have their mail delivered directly to their residence hall.)

The Rock

The Rock, is the large area adjacent to the UC that consists of an open area with steps. Here, many rallies, events, and free giveaways happen especially during the lunch hour. Make sure to stop by and check out what's going on!

The Breezeway

The UC Breezeway is the covered space between the Bookstore and the Food Court. This area gets extremely busy during lunch hours with vendors selling items and campus organizations selling food and advertising their events, just to name a few things. Make sure to travel this way to pick up great deals on presents to family and friends as well as to see what campus events are happening. The UC Patio

The UC Patio is the open area between the food court and the first floor of the UC. Normally, it is covered with patio tables and chairs which are a favorite hot spot to meet your friends for lunch and catch some rays at the same time. On Thursdays, local UM bands play on the Patio during lunch time. These "Patio Jams" incorporate various types of music and are a great way to hear some local talent. In addition, many campus events are held here ranging from cultural exhibitions to involvement fairs.

The Pool

The University Center Swimming Pool is a double-Olympic sized outdoor pool located beside the Patio. Heated to 80-82°F year-round, the pool offers short-course lap lanes, low-board diving area, and of course a great deck for sunning, studying, or listening to music while enjoying the beautiful weather. Admission is by Cane Card access and is free to UM students.

 

 

Ticketmaster

Ticketmaster, located just outside the convenience store, near the Information Desk in the UC, sells tickets to South Florida concerts, plays, and other events. MetroPasses, transit tokens, and UM football guest passes are also sold there. All sales are CASH, no credit cards, no checks, no 'CaneExpress accounts.

UM Publications and Media

The Hurricane

Since 1927, the Miami Hurricane student newspaper and The Ibis yearbook have been reporting and documenting the lives of University of Miami students. The Hurricane, published twice each week, features news articles, entertainment reviews, sports, and an opinion page. The Ibis, published annually, serves as a record of the year's events. Both publications are completely student operated, and are supported with student funds. Students are free to create their own publications, and two recent undertakings include Inprint Magazine, an online art and literary magazine, and The Eye, a monthly independent alternative newspaper.


The Board of Student Publications

The editors and business manager of the Hurricane and Ibis are elected by the Board of Student Publications, which consists of students, faculty, and administrators. These positions carry tuition remission and a stipend. Students aspiring to these positions should get involved with campus publications in their freshman and sophomore years


UMTV

UMTV is the University of Miami's cable television channel, owned and operated by the School of Communication. It is carried on AT&T Broadband and can be seen throughout the University on channel 40 as well as the surrounding Coral Gables community on channel 96. The cable channel provides local programming throughout the fall and spring semesters. A large part of this programming is student-produced.

Any full-time student may volunteer to work for UMTV. Producers, writers, directors, and on-air talent are needed along with both studio and field production crews. No experience is necessary but students must maintain a 2.5 GPA in their major and attend an initial meeting at the beginning of each semester followed by training workshops

WVUM 90.5 FM, The Voice of the University of Miami

WVUM, The Voice of the University of Miami, is UM's student-run radio station. Located in the student University Center, WVUM has been broadcasting to the Coral Gables campus and community since 1968, at 90.5 FM. WVUM offers a wide variety of music from under-recognized artists around the country and globe. The Voice also provides coverage of UM sporting events including football, basketball, baseball and volleyball. Tune in to the regularly scheduled weekly music, sports, and news radio shows for information on UM events, bands, and local happenings.

Top 50 Tips for UM Survival

1. If you are lost or struggling with your classes, the Academic Development Center offers free tutoring.
2. There is always free pool and popcorn in the Rat.
3. If you don't know what you want to major in, the Toppel Career Center has some assessments to match your interests to possible careers.
4. Toppel offers career exploration, free resume critiquing, and internship help. It's never too early to start preparing for your first real job!
5. You can take aerobics, spinning and yoga classes at the Wellness Center.Don't forget to bring your towel to the Wellness Center to work out!
6. There is a copy center conveniently located at both the Coral Gables Campus and Medical Campus.
7. Dining Dollars work at the Rat, Convenience store, and the Food Court.
8. Subway is located in the Law School courtyard.
9. There are 2 dining halls that students with meal plans can eat at. One is located next to "the Towers" (Hecht, Stanford, and Walsh) and the other is located near Pearson and Mahoney.
10. You can buy smoothies, sushi, and Starbucks coffee in the food court.
11. The Storm Surge Café is open for breakfast as well.
12. There are food carts throughout campus where you can pick up a soda, fruit, or coffee between classes.
13. Many local restaurants offer UM student discounts, all you have to do is ask!
14. You can book your plane ticket through STA travel in the UC.
15. Find out which books you need and buy them before classes to avoid the lines.You can sell back your books all year around.
16. The counseling center helps students with different problems and issues.
17. The UM Bookstore sells greeting cards for those last minute events.
18. If your Cane Card breaks, you can get it replaced for free.
19. All sporting events, including football, are free to UM students with a valid Cane Card.
20. You can take the Metro Rail to UM football games for free from the UM station.
21. There are University Credit Union and Bank of America ATM's throughout campus.
22. There is another University Credit Union branch located on Red Road.
23. Campus phones can be used to make local calls by dialing 9 first.
24. You can get your clothes dry-cleaned at the Storm Surge Café in the UC.
25. Swimming is not allowed in Lake Osceola, especially with the crocodiles that are seen frequently sunning themselves on the fountain.
26. There are lots of clubs and organizations to get involved in. A complete list of registered clubs and organizations can be found on the Student Activities website.
27. There are banners around campus publicizing upcoming events, make sure you read them so you don't miss out on something cool!
28. There are free shuttle services to Sunset Place, The Grove, and to Publix.
29. The Hurricane newspaper is published on Tuesday and Friday and can be picked up in the bins located in the UC and around campus.
30. All UM students receive an IBIS News email each week with upcoming activities, notices, free events, and more. Make sure to read it!
31. There is a student pharmacy located on the 2nd floor of the Student Health Care Center.
32. There are churches of just about every denomination located adjacent to campus.
33. If you move or change any contact information, you can update it in myUM.
34. Try to be advised ahead of the Registration rush and make sure to keep checking myUM for up to date open courses and sections.
35. Colleges and schools allow certain students to register online. Make sure you find out the criteria to see if it applies to you!
36. By University policy, you do not have to have more than 2 finals in one day.
37. The Office of the Registrar posts the academic calendar several years in advance. You can find out exactly when your breaks are so you can plan your vacation accordingly.
38. If you commute to school, many of the top parking areas are full by 8:30am.
39. Classes are ALWAYS held the Wednesday before Thanksgiving unless your professor makes an exception.
40. Many departments offer classes in the Residential Colleges. Keep an eye out for them in the schedule so you don't have to walk too far to get home.
41. You can look at professor evaluations on myUM before choosing your classes.
42. You can print an unofficial copy of your transcript on myUM for no charge. If you need a transcript, you can order it online through myUM.
43. You can reserve study rooms in the library for study groups.
44. Be sure to take the math placement test to ensure that you have been placed in the correct math class.
45. The Office of the Registrar provides proof of enrollment for auto and health insurance purposes.
46. If you are locked out of myUM, you must call Information Technology at 305-284-6565 option 3.
47. Make sure to turn in your Immunization Records or else you will not be able to register for classes the next semester.
48. Student Employment posts many on-campus jobs. Log on to myUM or stop by their office to take a look!
49. The Office of Student Accounts is located on the first floor of Ashe. Going before the semester begins will help you to avoid long lines.
50. Check out semester and summer study abroad opportunities at the Study Abroad Office in Allen Hall.
