Teaching, Studying and Leading at the University of Miami
The University of Miami is classified as a top-tier research university by the Carnegie Foundation, an organization in support of higher education for more than 100 years. A research university is one in which knowledge is literally being created by leading scholars, researchers and clinicians. At UM, these top researchers also teach undergraduate students. In 2002, the university was ranked number 51 among all U.S. universities for federally funded research.
UM has more than 120 undergraduate academic programs, from computer science to engineering, studio jazz to business law, and interdisciplinary programs from environmental science to music engineering technology.
Our dual-degree programs, in which a bachelor’s degree and an advanced degree are both earned, include biomedical engineering, Latin American studies, marine geology, medicine and physical therapy.
A major refers to a concentration of courses in one field or in two or more related fields. A minor is an abbreviated concentration, usually consisting of half as many courses as a major.
