BIOMEDICAL FACULTY MEMBER, DR. CHERIE STABLER, AS A CO-INVESTIGATOR, HAS RECEIVED A 3-YEAR, $3.3 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT, AWARDED BY THE JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION.

TINY TECHNOLOGY MAY YIELD MAJOR FINDS -- AND POSSIBLE PERILS
Dr. Cherie Stabler's, one of our Biomedical Engineering faculty members, research shows promise in restoring the pancreatic "beta cells" that make insulin, and could be used to fight diabetes.




CoE RESEARCHERS GET NIH GRANT TO DEVELOP TISSUE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY
A new grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will provide funding for University of Miami College of Engineering researchers to develop a novel bioreactor system that will control mechano-electrochemical environment for tissue growth and also provide online monitoring for the properties of engineered tissues.

The College of Engineering's M. Lewis Temares Entrepreneurship Forum, held April 23, 2009, featured Leonard Pinchuk, a UM alumnus and successful entrepreneur who has started several companies in the biomaterials and medical devices field.

ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING PROFESSOR RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS IBM FACULTY AWARD
Dr. Akmal Younis, Assistant Professor in Electronic and Computer Engineering, has received a $20,000 IBM Faculty Award that will be used to help further his research in health care informatics. He is the only UM professor to ever receive the honor, a competitive worldwide award.

BME DEPARTMENT IS A RECOGNIZED STRENTGH IN REGENERATIVE MEDICINE AND STEM CELLS RESEARCH
Dr. Herman S. Cheung, James L. Knight Professor, is guest editor of special issue of the Current Rheumatology Reviews Journal entitled "Current Challenges in Cartilage Tissue Engineering: A Review of Current Cellular-Based Therapies" (Current Rheumatology Reviews, 2009, Volume 5, No. 1 (Feb issue). In this special issue, 4 BME faculty members (Fotios Andreopoulos, C-Y Charles Huang, Weiyong Gu, and Herman S. Cheung) and 4 BME graduate students (A. Jackson, d. Pelaez, J Fritz & X. Vial) contributed 4 articles.

INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS TAKE THIRD PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
In this year's Rockwell Automation Simulation competition a fictional coastal community was seeking an emergency hurricane evacuation plan. University of Miami - Simucanes team members were Andrew Doyle, Bruno Hexsel, and Igor Maciel Fialkowski.
