Industrial Engineers are concerned with the design, implementation, and improvement of integrated systems of people, materials, equipment and energy. A major distinction between industrial engineering and other branches of engineering is that the industrial engineer must consider not only the action of machines that are governed by physical laws but also the behavior of people in organizations. Industrial engineering is often called the people-oriented engineering discipline, and its applications are widely expected in industrial, manufacturing, service, commercial and governmental activities. The demand for industrial engineers has remained strong over the past decade. This trend is expected to continue in the 2000s and beyond. Average salaries for industrial engineers are among the highest of college graduates. Since industrial engineering is the only engineering discipline with a significant training in business management, it has traditionally been a route to upper management in US and international businesses. The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Miami offers high quality education in the field of Industrial Engineering. At the undergraduate level, the Department of Industrial Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering with the following concentrations: Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management, Operations Research, Occupational Safety, and Health and Service Sector. The department also offers a five-year BS/MS program leading to the BS/MS degrees in Industrial Engineering. This program is open to exceptional students who are admitted to the graduate program in their junior year. The following undergraduate programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET):
In addition, the department also offers graduate programs leading to the following degrees:
Our department has 9 faculty members 100 undergraduate students and over 80 graduate students. Many faculty members are award-wining teachers. Our students, undergraduate and graduate alike, enjoy the personal attention of faculty. The department has pioneered the off-campus offering of graduate programs. Currently, we have six off-campus graduate programs, Ph. D. IE, MS IE, and MS MOT at both Pratt & Whitney in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and United Space Alliance in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Our major areas of research include: management of technology, ergonomics and biomechanics, operations research, supply chain management and logistics, productivity and quality engineering as well as manufacturing and automation. Starting in June 1999, the Department of Industrial Engineering embarked on a very ambitious plan, to totally renovate all of its facilities and to completely replace all of the equipment, computer hardware and software, robots and CNC machines in its teaching laboratories. Close to $800,000 were spent to fulfill this plan. To create a better learning atmosphere for the Industrial Engineering students and faculty, the main office of the department, the Industrial Engineering conference room, and all of the laboratory facilities were totally renovated. Additionally, our department has purchased state-of-the-art equipment, including a Vicon high-speed motion analysis imaging system, a rapid prototyping machine, an ABB IRB 140 robot, and 2 high precision Okuma numerically controlled machining centers. Lastly, the strong commitment of our faculty to research is reflected in their ability to attract funding in their areas of expertise, which culminated in the establishment of the following centers of excellence to enhance research and industry collaboration:
