Summer Community Outreach Programs

HHMI High School Scholars program for both public and private high school students

Our Summer High School Scholars Research program, funded by our Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) grant, supports students from public and private high schools.  Students, in teams, do biomedical research for seven weeks at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine.  At the conclusion of the program teams present their research through presentations and research papers in scientific journal format.  Several of our high school participants have published their research in high-impact scientific journals. Public school students receive a stipend for their participation and private school students receive community service credit.  Metropasses will be provided for all students.  The 2009 program begins on June 15 and concludes July 31 with students presenting their work to the public. Students interested in applying for the 2009 program should fill out the application form and follow the instructions on the bottom of the form for submission.  APPLICATIONS MUST BE POSTMARKED NO LATER THAN APRIL 10, 2009.

Research in Ecology Summer Program

The Department of Biology at the University of Miami offers a six-week summer program, Research in Ecology, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The program is for rising 7th graders (summer between 6th and 7th grades) and middle school science teachers of all grade levels. The major activity of the program is a research experience where the students work in research groups, alongside middle school teachers, undergraduates, graduate students and faculty. In addition, there are interactive classes in statistics, computer science, science-writing, and ecology designed to prepare the students and teachers for presenting their research findings. Students receive free lunches on Tuesdays and Thursday and Metropasses. Teachers receive a stipend and free lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The 2009 program begins on June 15 and ends on July 24, culminating with a final research symposium on Sunday, July 26.
