Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholar for biology majors (HHMI).
An HHMI Scholar Student Researcher is required to participate in research as partial fulfillment of the conditions of their grant funding. A Faculty Mentor guides the student in developing a proposal and fulfilling the student's research requirements for the grant contract. Bridge Student Researcher Students can enter the HHMI Scholar program through "bridges" with Miami-Dade College or as high school graduates after completing an introductory chemistry summer course. Students in the bridges program are expected to devote at least 10 hours a week to the research experience. Students begin their research experience while at Miami Dade College. Prerequisites for the bridges program can be found on the details page. Typically Miami Dade students continue their research if they transfer to UM in the HHMI program. Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD)
The aim of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity is to increase the number and academic competitiveness of undergraduate scholars seeking a PhD. Specifically the program is designed to provide underrepresented minority students with an intense research experience to better prepare them for entry into PhD programs. At the graduate level our aim is to insure that all pre-doctoral IMSD Fellows are competitive for post-doctoral or research faculty position after completing the PhD degree. Florida-Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation for biomedical engineering (FGLSAMP)
An FGLSAMP Student Researcher is required to participate in research for at least 10 hours a week as partial fulfillment of their grant funding. The faculty mentor guides students in developing a proposal and fulfilling the research requirements for the grant contract. Students are often required to participate in a project for multiple semesters and often students are able to work independently with little direct supervision. Mentors and students will complete a FGAMP Student Researcher Evaluation at the end of each semester and if necessary, mentors will be asked to assign a grade to students' projects on a semester basis. Bridge to the Baccalaureate
The University of Miami, (UM) and Miami Dade College, (MDC) have collaborated on the "Bridge to the Baccalaureate Program " since 1994. The long-term goal of the program is to encourage students from underrepresented minorities to enter research careers in the biomedical sciences. Further, it is designed to improve the academic competitivenss of minority students at MDC and facilitate their transition into the biomedical sciences at UM. The Bridge to the Baccalaureate is funded and supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, (HHMI) and the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, (NIGMS). This funding provides students with research experiences while at MDC and scholarships to UM. The 3 key components of the Bridge Program are:
-
Research experiences
-
Faculty mentoring
-
Special courses
