Application Process

Q) What are the dates for the 2010 Summer Scholar Programs?
A) 2010 SSP starts on Saturday, June 26, 2010 (check-in), and ends on Friday, July 16, 2010 (check-out).

Q) What are the application criteria?
A) High school students currently in their sophomore or junior year with a 3.0 grade point average should submit a completed application with the non-refundable $35 application fee, one recommendation survey completed by a teacher or counselor (must be printed from the website), one essay, and one official transcript from their school. Both domestic and international students are welcome to apply. Applications are accepted from November 15, 2009 until May 1, 2010. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed based on program availability.

Q) Do you accept students who are homeschooled?
A) We accept students who are schooled at home just like any other students.

Resident or Commuter Student

Q) Can I come as a commuter student?
A) Of course, as long as you have a place to live near the University of Miami campus.

Q) Who can apply as a commuter student?
A) Anyone can apply as a commuter student; however, ideally those who choose this option should have a Florida residence located in either Miami-Dade or Broward counties. Transportation to and from campus is not provided for commuter students. It is highly discouraged that students come to the program as a commuter student unless they are living with relatives or parents in Miami-Dade or Broward area.

Q) Do most of the parents accompany students?
A) Families who live within a 4-5 hour drive of the UM usually will bring their children because students are not allowed to have a vehicle on campus. Those who are out of state or country typically travel alone, but our staff greets them at the Miami International Airport only, i.e., if a student will be flying in the Fort Lauderdale airport, he/she will have to make own arrangements to get on campus, as well as upon the return at the end of program.

Program Cost

Q) How much does the total program cost?
A) Residential program tuition fee: $5,570 (includes $500 confirmation deposit)
Commuter program tuition fee: $4,570 (includes $500 confirmation deposit)

Q) I am a University of Miami employee, can I use my tuition benefits?
A) University of employees are welcome to have their sons or daughters apply to the programs. Tuition Remission is not available for this program; however there is a discount if the student wish to attend the program as a commuter student. The Employee Dependent Commuter Student fee is $3,970 and the student must be registered with Benefits Administration as a dependent. The UM I.D. number (or C#) of both the employee and the student need to be noted on the student application.

Q) What does the program fee include?
A) The residential program fee includes: housing, meals, tuition, text books/printed materials access to campus fitness facility and doctor's office, evening activities, and weekend field trips. The commuter program fee includes: Lunch Monday through Friday, tuition, textbooks/printed materials, evening activities, and weekend field trips.

Q) Are there any additional costs?
A) Yes. The non-refundable application fee is $35. Admitted student are responsible for submitting a room key deposit of $65 (residential students only) and a student I.D. card deposit of $25. These deposits are refundable providing that students do not lose their I.D. card or room key. Commuter students will have to purchase a parking permit for $111 should they want to park on campus.

Scholarships or Financial Aid

Q) Are scholarships or financial aid available?
A) There are no program funded scholarships or financial aid available.

Campus Life

Q) Will students who live off campus still enjoy the program?
A) The program is designed for the enjoyment of all that attend. Those who appreciated their experience the most participated in the evening and weekend activities. Those activities give students time to bond outside of class and also provide a way to learn about forming mature interpersonal relationships and communicating with a diverse group of people. The individual student experience will be shaped by activity choices and level of involvement.

Q) What is the class schedule and how are classes structured?
A) Classes are held from 8:20 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. They consist of lectures, tests, quizzes, projects, homework, and a final exam. The program is structured around hands-on experience, which may consist of guest lecturers, open discussion, lab work, and field trips.

Q) What do students do during their free time?
A) After class, students may choose to work on assignments, study, or participate in the activities planned by the program staff. There are optional off-campus field trips to the beach, sporting events, and snorkeling on weekends. Students may also choose to participate in a volunteer service project.

Q) Are students chaperoned? What about security?
A) The safety of our Summer Scholars is our primary concern. All participants are strongly encouraged to live in the residence hall. Residential students are not allowed to have a vehicle on campus, nor are they allowed to ride in vehicle with the commuter students. Those flying into Miami alone will be greeted at the Miami International Airport by program staff. Residential students live on floors separated by gender, which will also house 3-5 University of Miami students, called Community Assistants whose role are to supervise and mentor the participants. Non-program participants are not allowed beyond the lobby of the residence hall except for move-in day. The front desk of the residence hall is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is equipped with electronic access systems that restrict entry to residents only. Public safety is available should the students need assistance at any time. Security at UM operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Trained police and security officers from the Department of Public Safety patrol the campus.

Q) Should I bring a computer?
A) Students are not required to bring a personal computer from home since they are available at the library. However, most students who did not bring their laptop wish they had. On the one hand, it will be easier to do homework especially after curfew.

Academics

Q) Do students earn academic credit?
A) Yes. Students will earn college credit and grades that will be part of their record at the University of Miami. An official transcript can be requested from the Office of the Registrar to submit to other colleges or high schools. Application for credit is subject to the discretion of the institutions.

Q) Will attending the program help students if they apply to the University of Miami?
A) The University of Miami welcomes Summer Scholar participants to apply as undergraduates; however, attending the program does not guarantee admission.
