For more information on the program, click here.
The field study program examines innovative urban projects that are shaping a new South Africa, and provides students with an opportunity to engage in service learning in an impoverished community in Cape Town integrated with academic learning about poverty, race, children and community development. Students will be placed in service learning assignments with the world renowned Amy Biehl Foundation Trust. http://www.amybiehl.org/. Some examples of field excursions are the Cradle of Humankind, Pilanesberg Game reserve, Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope, and Soweto. As 2010 is the World Cup year for South Africa, space is limited in this program.

Accommodation: Guest house accommodation is arranged for the Johannesburg stay, and accommodation is arranged by the Amy Biehl Foundation for the Cape Town portion of the course. If needed, accommodation is available for the Miami pre-departure portion of the course at UM’s conference housing.

Cost: $4,440 for 3 credits undergraduate tuition. Students also pay a $2,580 program fee that includes lodging, local transportation and field trips. Students must budget for the cost of airfare and personal expenses.

Application Deadline: Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until March 1.
