Scholarships and Financial Aid

Financial Aid

Most forms of University of Miami financial aid are available to UM students studying abroad. When you participate in a semester or summer study abroad program through IEEP, you will be registered via the UM Registrar for the study abroad program. For semester programs, you will be enrolled as a full-time student and charged regular full tuition costs. For summer programs, you will be registered at UM for the number of credits of that program or course (ranging from 3-9 credits). Consequently, most forms of UM scholarships and aid that you receive when normally enrolled at UM should kick in just the same. The same grants and scholarships available to you for semester programs will likely not be applicable to summer study programs. Students receiving financial aid from other institutions should contact their financial aid office to determine if the aid is transferable.

Personal Expenses

In addition to the academic expenses that vary with each program, personal expenses such as laundry, entertainment, and local transportation range from $1,000 to $3,000 per semester depending on program. For summer programs, students should budget for personal expenses which will vary depending on the living costs in the country, the duration of the program, and whether room and board is included in the program fee. Students should also budget for airfare which could range from $500 to $2,000 depending on the program site and time of travel. Additional student expenses will vary according to individual spending habits and travel. Expenses also may increase or decrease depending on the exchange rate at the time of study.
