This course is an on-site study of European cities and towns. Students and faculty travel together to explore their most significant historical buildings and public spaces. Class instruction is given on site, providing an understanding of these cities, their architecture, and history. The first part of the course trip (3 credits) includes Paris, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Madrid, followed by the second part (3 credits) which includes Madrid, Athens, and the Greek isles. This program is in the tradition of the Grand Tour of the XIX century, when northern Europeans traveled to Italy and Greece to learn the culture of Antiquity.

This course-trip is intended for undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Miami and other accredited universities. No prerequisite course required. Academic activities are focused on lectures, seminars, and visits to buildings and places. Required work includes assigned readings, a course journal, and a final examination.

The itinerary includes the most significant cities, buildings, and arts of Europe, in a cross section of history. Paris: Champs Elysees, Place Vendome, the Opera and the Eiffel Tower. Venice: the Grand Canal and St. Mark's Square, Florence: the Duomo and the Piazza della Signorica. Madrid: the streets and plazas of Madrid "Antiguo," the nearby towns of Toledo and Segovia, and the Escorial. Athens: the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and Athena Nike Temple.
