Spend the summer in Santander, on the northern coast of Spain, for this Intensive course in Spanish Art History and Language at the Universidad de Cantabria. Cantabria is a region of diverse scenery, climate, history, and customs. The city of Santander is nestled between the sea and the mountains, and the natural beauty of its bay is one of the city's most characteristic features. In addition, it is a cosmopolitan city steeped in tradition and friendly hospitality.
ARH 505, From Goya to Deconstruction

This seminar explores the roots of contemporary art (modernism and post-modernism) by studying a timeline of Art from Goya and French 19th century modernism to the present. Topics include the first artists (cave paintings), Velasquez, Goya, Manet, Picasso and contemporary artists focusing on the collections of the museums of Spain.
This course meets general education arts/humanities requirement
Spanish Language Course, Three Credits
You'll be placed in one of four levels of instruction after taking a placement exam. Courses are offered from introductory through the advanced levels and are geared toward acquiring Spanish language skills. Students will spend 40 hours focused on Spanish grammar and 20 hours devoted to perfecting conversation skills. Classes are held from Monday to Friday with three hours of academic work per day, for a total of 60 contact hours and 3 UM credits in Spanish. Depending on placement into the five levels, students may earn the equivalency for SPA 101, 102, 211 or 242 at UM.

For SAP 471 only – application for UM Application Regular Semester and Summer Programs
For ARH 505 only – application for UM Course Abroad
Program Fee: $9,350 (estimated), includes 6 credits tuition, IEEP fee, room and board. There is also a 3-credit program option for the student who wants to only take Spanish or the UM faculty-taught ARH course.
