Summer Faculty-Led Courses Abroad

N./S. America Programs



(Program entering sixth year with SPA and LAS offerings!)

FIRST SUMMER SESSION 2008

  • Six weeks in Valparaiso and Vina del Mar
  • DATES: May 19 – June 27, 2008
  • Valparaiso Host: Universidad de Playa Ancha (UPLA)  
  • Enroll in a 3-credit SPA course and a 3-credit LAS course or Internship

 

Chile Summer Photo Album

Travel to Chile and study Chilean culture and Spanish language under the direction of UM faculty. Now in its sixth year, this program will take place in the coastal city of Valparaiso at the Universidad de Playa Ancha. Students will stay in a hotel in Vina del Mar. Students may complete the foreign language requirement with SPA 211.

Academic Offering:  (3 to 6 credits)

LAS 301: Intercultural Communication in the Latin American Context (3 credits) taught by UM Professor Andrew Lynch (course taught in English)
LAS 505: Internship in Latin American Studies (3 credits)
Arranged by UM Professor Lillian Manzor and supervised by Professor Norberto Flores (Universidad de Playa Ancha, Chile)
SPA 211: Intermediate Spanish I (3 credits)
Taught by UM Ph.D. student Ariel Gutiérrez   under the supervision of UM Professor Andrew Lynch (course taught in Spanish)
SPA 322: Audiovisual Communication in Chile (3 credits)
Taught by Professor Norberto Flores (Universidad de Playa Ancha, Chile) (course taught in Spanish)

Weekend and Day Field Trips will tentatively include a historic tour of Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, an overnight trip to La Serena and Valle del Elqui, Isla Negra and home of Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda.

Costs: $8,100 (estimated) tuition for the 6-credit option. Students are also charged a travel package of $2,200 (estimated) to cover lodging, most meals, museum entrances and field trips.
