Europe - Other Summer Programs

SUMMER SESSION 2008

"It was an awesome experience, which allowed me to meet new people from all over the U.S. and Europe. The program met all my expectations and I developed a solid understanding of British political thought and systems of government."

Christopher Colby, Past Participant

SAP 468, Credits: 3 undergraduate

Dates: June 29 - July 19, 2008

Steeped in history and tradition, the University of Oxford is one of the world's most renowned and influential institutions of higher education. If you are an outstanding student, you won't want to miss a rare opportunity to study at Oxford.

The session lasts three weeks and students must choose two courses for 1.5 credits each in one of the two programs. History, Politics and Society offers seminars in British politics, contemporary British society, the European Union, and Soviet and post-Soviet politics. If that option isn't your cup of tea, choose one or both of the English Literature sessions and study Shakespeare, the Romantics, modern literary theory, or women's fiction.

You'll be housed at Exeter College, one of the university's medieval colleges founded in 1314. Possible excursions include a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's home, a tour of nearby Warwick Castle, and a visit to Parliament.

University of Oxford – Summer 2008

In order to be considered, students must meet the following criteria:

  • You must have completed your Junior year by the end of Spring semester 2008
  • You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 by the end of Fall semester 2007
  • You must be majoring or minoring in English Literature, History, Political Science or International Studies
  • You must know in advance which specific Oxford classes you would like to take and include this information with your application as well as one alternate class (see list below)

Your essay must be 400 words and address the following topics:

  • your academic reasons for wishing to attend the program
  • what you hope to get out of the program
  • what you are likely to contribute to the intellectual life of the program
  • include details of literary or political science courses you have previously taken, or indicate the relevance of the program to your present course of study

Please note that the Oxford program requires you to read the required texts before the program begins.  You will receive a list of required reading at the end of April.  For more information on the program, click here.

Each class at Oxford is worth 1.5 UM credits.  Students can apply for either one or two sessions. Each class is limited to four UM students maximum, so popular topics like Shakespeare may not be available.  Courses will be reserved for students on rolling basis, so apply early to avoid disappointment.

Remember that your application is not complete without the list of classes you would like to take at Oxford.  You should meet with your academic advisor before turning in your application in order to make sure that the classes you take at Oxford will fulfill UM major or minor requirements.

The deadline to submit a complete application is February 15, 2008. Absolute last day to submit a complete application is Thursday, February 15, 2008, however, please note that the admissions process is rolling, so the earlier applications are given more consideration. Please include four passport-sized photos with your application.
