Tropical Studies in Costa Rica
SUMMER SESSION 2008

Credits: 4 or 8 undergraduate
OTS courses are widely recognized for their academic excellence in the field of tropical biology research studies. Student will gain an in-depth knowledge of field ecology and biology, develop skills in field research techniques and learn to assess issues that have an impact on conservation and sustainability in Costa Rica.
Academic Offerings (4 or 8 credits)
Session 1: Field Tropical Biology, 4 credits. This course requires one year of college level biology and gives students a broad overview of a diverse array of tropical ecosystems.
Session 2: Introduction to Ethnobiology, 4 credits. This course offers students the unique opportunity to learn about the Latin American culture, while studying medicinal, ceremonial and other uses of plants and animals by indigenous groups in Costa Rica, as well as the opportunity to conduct hands-on field research. One semester of college Biology and 2 semesters of college Spanish are required.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): OTS also offers a highly competitive 10-week undergraduate research opportunity for upper level biology or ecology majors (May 26 - August 2, 2008).
Estimated Costs: $5,550 (estimated) per session includes 4 credits undergraduate tuition, IEEP fee, room and board, and local travel.
Application Deadlines: REU: January 15, 2008; Session 1 and 2: Feburary 15, 2008.
