Q: Is this a marketable degree?
A: Definitively. Professionals from varying occupations believe their liberal arts degree prepared them effectively for their careers and often recommended a liberal arts major to students considering those same careers. The skills that your liberal arts degree develops are applicable in a variety of job fields; you'll be surprised just how "marketable" you are to prospective employers.
Q: Can I transfer my previous college work?
A: Yes; All credits earned from an accredited college or university are accepted assuming a grade of "C" or better on college level, academic courses. The last 45 credits of the 120 credit major must be earned at the University of Miami.
Q: When are classes available?
A: Students may select courses from day, evening or weekend schedules depending on their preference.
Q: Can I go on to graduate school?
A: Absolutely. The BGS degree prepares you for further study at any accredited college or university. Our graduates have pursued graduate degrees in liberal arts, education, the humanities, the social sciences, law and business.
Q: What is the tuition?
A: It is 1/3 the normal tuition rate; we charge $485 per credit.
Q: Is it a normal degree?
A: Yes. You receive a BA in General Studies. Almost every major university in the U.S. has a similar program; a bachelor's degree in general or liberal studies is just as acceptable as any other degree.
Q: Do I get a major?
A: No; however, you do get to pick your own area of concentration. You can pick up to three different subjects and outline your own 30 credit curriculum. This curriculum must be approved by Assistant before you begin taking your A/C classes.
Q: What are the colloquia?
A: They are classes that are only open to BGS students. You must take 5 throughout your degree program, one of which must be ENG 333: Writing the Research Paper. Otherwise, you can take whichever colloquia interest you.
Q: Is there financial aid available?
A: Yes. We offer the annual Osher Scholarship to 20 recipients. In addition, you are eligible for financial aid along the guidelines set forth by the financial aid office. All financial aid is handled by the financial aid office, and concerns about it must be taken up with them.
Q: How long does it take to finish the degree?
A: It depends on how many credits you transfer in. Many of our students come in with an AA-if this is the case the degree can be finished within 2-3 years. If you have fewer credits, it may take anywhere from 3-6 years, depending on how many classes you take per semester.
Q: Does TR apply to the BGS program?
A: Yes; the same rules apply as usual-7 credits per semester, 8 credits total for the summer; 3 additional credits for either Intersession or Spring Break. Please contact the tuition remission department at (305) 284-2728.
Q: What is the age requirement for BGS?
A: You must be either 22 years old or 4 years out of high school.
