Immunization against seasonal flu is no longer be available at the Student Health Service. Seasonal flu vaccine is currently in short supply and although additional supplies are expected, vendors are not able to commit to delivery times. If additional doses arrive, seasonal flu shots will be offered, once again, at the Student Health Service and off-site locations. Since virtually all of the circulating flu is H1N1 (Swine Flu), there is no urgency for immunization against seasonal flu. Immunization against H1N1 will be offered according to CDC and local Health Department guidelines. The Student Health Service will be collaborating with the Miami-Dade County Public Health Department to administer H1N1 vaccine to students, as supplies become available. Although mid-October has been set as a target to begin H1N1 immunization programs, no firm dates have been established. Please periodically check this site for updates. More information about Seasonal Flu is available at www.cdc.gov/flu. Information about novel H1N1 Influenza is available on our H1N1 webpage. |

Who should get a flu shot? An annual flu shot is recommended for everyone 50 years of age and older. This includes people of any age with chronic diseases of the heart, lung, or kidneys or with diabetes, immunosuppressant, or severe forms of anemia. Other groups for whom the vaccine is specifically recommended are residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities, and children and teenagers who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy and therefore may be at risk for developing Reye's syndrome after viral infections. Those in close or frequent contact with anyone in a high-risk group should also be vaccinated. |
