Research is the key ingredient behind humanity's scientific and intellectual progress -- and the University of Miami stands among the world's greatest private research powerhouses.

Generating New Knowledge and Innovations

Be it at our picturesque Coral Gables campus, in one of the cutting-edge facilities at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Miami’s health district, or at the world-class marine and atmospheric science hub on beautiful Biscayne Bay, our diverse community of Miami Hurricanes scholars are making a difference.  With 12 colleges and schools, complemented by several interdisciplinary centers and institutes that enjoy regional, national, and global ties, there is little doubt that the University of Miami is emerging as an international academic powerhouse.

The University is engaged in the largest construction program in its history, with more than $1.9 billion in projects currently in the planning, design, and construction phases.  We support over 5,000 graduate students and postdoctoral trainees and offer mentored research experiences to our over 10,000 undergraduates.  Counting more than 159,000 alumni, we are proud to have produced some of the most successful researchers in academia, government, and industry.  Over the past three years, we have added five members of the national academies to our faculty.

In last year’s extremely competitive funding period, our faculty received over $330 million in sponsored grants and contracts, an increase of more than $20 million over the prior year.  We surpassed $100 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, making us the top NIH-funded research institution in the state, and in addition our National Science Foundation (NSF) grant funding increased by 24%.  Our technology transfer efforts will produce an estimated $1 million in new revenue this year and we have created or are in the process of creating 20 new start-up companies.

The faculty and work highlighted here are emblematic of the exciting research taking place among and between academic disciplines throughout the University.

NIH Public Access Policy
The National Institutes of Health recently announced its new Public Access Policy regarding peer-reviewed publications. The new NIH Public Access Policy will ensure published NIH-funded research is accessible to the public, health care providers, educators, and scientists, and will help advance science and improve human health. The federal law basically requires that peer-reviewed, published articles resulting from NIH-funded research must be submitted to PubMed Central. In addition, effective as of May 25, authors must include PubMed Central ID numbers in NIH applications and reports when citing their articles covered by the policy.
