What is Be the Change: National Gandhi Day of Service?

MISSION

University of Miami's Be the Change: National Gandhi Day of Service is an annual event sponsored by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership, which fosters leadership and community engagement through volunteerism and service. This event draws individuals who believe in the values espoused by Mahatma Gandhi and other leaders who have devoted their lives to public service and engagement in their communities. Gandhi Day of Service empowers participants to engage in collective civic action based on Gandhi's values of equality and passion.

VISION
To establish Be the Change as a widely recognized and well-respected event that fosters involvement in community service and civic engagement. Be the Change will provide the platform for meaningful service that highlights the universal beliefs of compassion, selflessness, and unity.

HISTORY
The first Gandhi Day of Service took place on October 4, 1997 at the University of Michigan when 200 students were sent out to volunteer in the community. On the University of Miami campus, the first Gandhi Day of Service was organized by Indian Students Association in 2003 and it consisted of about a dozen volunteers. The following year, UM LINK and COISO co-sponsored the event to send out close to 100 UM students to volunteer. By 2006, the program had expanded to include other campuses such as Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University, and Miami Dade College. Over 1000 student volunteers were sent to 24 different sites.
