World-Renowned Psychologist Joins University of Miami's School of Education Faculty
Coral Gables, FL (Nov. 6, 2006) -- The University of Miami announced today that world-renowned psychotherapist, Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., has been named a distinguished visiting professor in the School of Education.
"The School of Education's mission is to prepare leaders in the study and promotion of multicultural well-being in families, schools and communities,” said Dr. Isaac Prilleltensky, dean of the UM School of Education. “As a scientist practitioner, Dr. Meichenbaum embodies the qualities of the professional we seek to train: A professional who uses the best available scientific evidence to advance the psychosocial and educational well-being of children and youth."
Currently, Dr. Meichenbaum is distinguished professor emeritus at the University of Waterloo, in Ontario, Canada, and research director for The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment, in Miami.
One of the founders of Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Meichenbaum's work combines the promotion of personal well-being with the improvement of environmental conditions. This combination is vital to enhance the quality of life of children, youth, and neighborhoods, according to his book, Cognitive Behaviour Modification: An Integrative Approach, considered a classic in the field.
“His stellar scientific record will complement the school’s existing faculty expertise, while his extensive experience will be vital in promoting the school as an authority on the promotion of multicultural well-being,” said Prilleltensky.
In a survey reported in the American Psychologist, North American clinicians voted Dr. Meichenbaum “one of the ten most influential psychotherapists of the century”. Meichenbaum has authored and co-authored numerous books; he is a co-founder of the Journal of Cognitive Therapy and Research and served as its Associate Editor, as well as being on the editorial boards of a dozen other journals.
Dr. Meichenbaum was a recipient of the prestigious Izaak Killiam Fellowship Award administered by Canada Council and appointed Honorary President of the Canadian Psychological Association. Dr. Meichenbaum is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Fellow of both the American and Canadian Psychological Associations. He has consulted widely for such varied clinical populations as patients in psychiatric hospitals, residential programs, adolescent offenders, individuals with developmental delays and those with traumatic brain injury, military organizations, industrial and educational institutions.
