The University Of Miami Takes First Step In The New Year With Virgin
UM Student Government Launches HealthMiles Program
Coral Gables, FL (January 14, 2007) – When students resume classes in the new year at UM, there will be an additional way to help them keep their resolutions to be healthy. Beginning January 14th University of Miami Student Government will encourage students to join Virgin HealthMiles. As the first university in the country to take part in this program, UM is offering its students the opportunity to track their health and fitness in an innovative way.
Virgin HealthMiles is a first-of-its-kind health rewards program that motivates and incentivizes people to manage their health and become more active. The program has only been launched in companies and corporations, but never in a university setting. “We are very excited to be the first University in the country to partner with Virgin on this initiative,” said student government president Danny Carvajal. “The enthusiasm of our students towards the HealthMiles program is evidence that college students are just as concerned about their health as any other population. It is programs like this that really boost the quality of life for our student body.”
As part of their participation, UM students will be able to track their progress and view their measurements on the LifeZone; a highly interactive, personalized, password-protected website. They will receive the GoZone, a pedometer which will track their steps, distance, calories, and length of activity. It is conveniently designed to be clipped to a belt and worn throughout the day. The student’s progress can then be measured by analyzing weight, blood pressure and more through the HealthZone kiosk located in the University Center on the Coral Gables campus.
In addition, students participating in the program will accrue “miles” that are converted into HealthCash, which can be redeemed for products or services from over 50 leading retailers in the U.S.
On Wednesday, January 30th, UM’s Student Government will recognize their partnership with Virgin during an event held on the UC patio at 12 p.m. UM President Donna E. Shalala and Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Patricia A. Whitely will give remarks on behalf of the University as well as Vice President of Virgin HealthMiles Andrew Pelosi.
Before the launch, a group of 50 ambassadors tested the program. So far they have all agreed that it is a success. “The participants have become hooked to the program, often creating challenges amongst one another,” said student ambassador Lauren Carey. “They enjoy seeing their activity progress over time as they rack up HealthMiles and convert them to rewards.”
The program is geared toward UM students for a small monthly fee. For more information please contact UM Student Government President Danny Carvajal at 305-284-3082.
