National Winners In Engineering

Three researchers at the University of Miami College of Engineering receive prestigious award

Coral Gables, FL (February 14, 2008)— University of Miami professors Dr. Zhenhua Jiang and Dr. Xiaodong Cai, from the College of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, recently  received the prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award. This award recognizes exceptional scientists who, in the early stages of their profession, demonstrate outstanding potential for scientific contributions to society. They join fellow researcher, Manohar N. Murthi, who in 2004 became the first in the College of Engineering to be awarded the prize.

All NSF CAREER Awards are $400,000 given to the scientists over a period of five years and intended to further their research.  Jiang, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, received the award for his work in the area of sustainable energy infrastructures. His research has the potential to establish an entirely new field in the area of electric power engineering. Through his endeavor, Jiang hopes to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of secure, reliable and efficient utilization of renewable and alternative energy resources. The tools and techniques studied by Jiang will provide new teaching and research topics, as well as hands-on- learning opportunities for undergraduates and graduate students in engineering.

Cai, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will use the award to support his work outlined in his proposal titled “Stochastic Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Gene Networks.” His research will potentially find applications in the development of new drugs, synthetic gene circuits and the investigation of human diseases, like cancer.

Manohar N. Murthi became the first faculty member in the College of Engineering to receive the NSF CAREER Award. The prize was given for his development of a Voice over Internet Protocol framework and methods to be used during emergencies and other demanding situations, such as distance-learning.
