The University of Miami School of Law to Host an Evening in Honor of Professor Bernard H. Oxman
Appointed the Richard A. Hausler Chair
Coral Gables, FL (February 18, 2008) –The University of Miami School of Law will host a reception in honor of the appointment of Professor Bernard H. Oxman as the Richard A. Hausler Professor of Law. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5 at the Lowe Art Museum. Oxman’s lecture on The United States and the Future of International Law will be followed by a reception.
Oxman received the prestigious appointment in 2007 in response to his extensive professional and scholastic achievements at the School of Law and otherwise. He is the only American lawyer ever appointed to serve as judge ad hoc on both the International Court of and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Furthermore, he serves as the faculty chair of the Master of Laws Program in Ocean and Coastal Law, and was recently appointed co-editor in chief of the American Journal of International Law for a second term. He previously served as associate dean of the Law School from 1987 to 1990.
Prior to joining the faculty in 1977, Oxman was assistant legal advisor for Oceans, Environment and Scientific Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, as well as U.S. Representative to the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia College and a J.D. from Columbia Law School. Oxman regularly teaches Conflict of Laws, International Law, Law of the Sea and Torts courses at UM’s School of Law.
The prestigious Hausler Chair was established in 1996 in memory of the late Professor Richard A. Hausler, a beloved and highly respected fixture at the University of Miami School of Law for 52 years who invested himself in the future of the School of Law and its students. Hausler played a key role in establishing the curriculum for the Master of Laws in Taxation program.
