UM Graduate Schools Rank High in U.S. News & World Report’s Rankings
Coral Gables, FL (April 23, 2009) -- The University of Miami placed high in U.S. News & World Report’s 2010 edition of “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” which were released today.
The graduate program at UM’s School of Education is ranked No. 41, while the University’s Miller School of Medicine comes in at No. 51. Meanwhile, the graduate program in tax law at UM’s School of Law placed sixth in the rankings and the law school moved up 11 spots.
The Department of Psychology’s Clinical Psychology Program ranked 25th in the nation out of 206 programs considered.
U.S. News analyzed more than 12,000 graduate programs for this year’s list, using several indicators to calculate its rankings. In its ratings of medical schools, for example, the magazine looked at factors such as student-selectivity admission statistics, faculty to student ratio, and research activity.
The Miller School’s No. 51 ranking is one slot higher than last year. Within the past few years, the school, located in the Miami Health District, has significantly expanded its infrastructure and research initiatives with the completion of a new eco-friendly Biomedical Research Building; acquiring its own hospital; attracting top researchers in genetics, cardiology, and other specialties; and launching a comprehensive network of University-based medical affiliates under the brand UHealth—University of Miami Health System.
The school’s physical therapy program, which five years ago was granted department status within the Miller School, was ranked No. 7 and has consistently placed in the top 10 in the U.S. News rankings.
The Department of Psychology, which has the largest Ph.D. program at the University, is organized into three divisions—adult, child, and health—that oversee the major graduate and research programs within the department. The Clinical Psychology Program cuts across all three divisions, providing clinical training with an emphasis on adult, child, pediatric, and health clinical psychology.
At UM’s School of Education, which rose four slots in the rankings from last year, graduate programs in teaching and learning, exercise and sport sciences, and educational and psychological studies are offered.
The law school’s No. 6-ranked Graduate Program in Taxation offers a curriculum that allows students to pursue a full range of tax specialties while offering a foundation in the core subjects of taxation. The program’s faculty includes full-time professors experienced in private practice as well as adjunct instructors from leading South Florida law firms and the Internal Revenue Service.
All the rankings can be viewed on US News & World Report’s website www.usnews.com and the magazine will be on newsstands on Monday.
