In order to centralize support and reduce costs, the Department of Information Technology (IT) is consolidating its email services into one email system. This is UMail, which is also referred to as Microsoft Exchange/Outlook. All other email services provided by IT including MyCanes, OpenVMS, and UNIX will be discontinued by May 31, 2009. For more information on how this will affect you, please see the FAQ below.

Faculty member

No new accounts will be issued for MyCanes. All MyCanes, OpenVMS and UNIX accounts will be migrated to UMail or closed by May 31, 2009. Faculty who are currently using MyCanes for their courses should contact Scott Colmery, the SharePoint Projects and Development Group manager, at 305-284-3062 or via email: scolmery@miami.edu
Those faculty members using the email services of OpenVMS or UNIX should contact Bob Syren at 305-284-3980 or via email: bsyren@miami.edu.

Student

The scheduled migration of all Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors has been completed. Seniors and Graduate students may maintain their accounts until May 31st, 2009. To avoid interruption of service we recommend students voluntarily move off MyCanes as soon as possible.

Staff

Will be notified by UMail Staff when they will be migrated.

Alumni

Alumni can continue to use MyCanes until May 31, 2009. They may also use UMail for up to 12 months after they graduate, but we strongly suggest use of an external email service.

Will all accounts be migrated to UMail from these systems?

No, only individual primary accounts of current faculty, students and staff will be migrated. These are the accounts registered in the central HR database system where the individual's preferred email address is listed on one of these systems (MyCanes, OpenVMS, UNIX).

How do I migrate my email, calendar, contacts, and/or files now?

Information Technology provides both self-help tools and documentation and technician assisted support in the migration to UMail. Please review the table below to see where you can find assistance.
