Australia is an island continent with a coastline stretching almost 12,500 miles. It is  a country with high standards of academic excellence. Its proximity to Asia and the remaining Pacific Rim places Australia in the hub of major global activities.

Study abroad in Australia is a wonderful opportunity to study in an English speaking country that is different from the U.S. in so many ways.


MONASH UNIVERSITY

Semester Programs

Monash is part of the Group of Eight which consists of the top eight research universities in Australia.  The university boasts some of the country’s most noted faculty. Although it is a relatively young university, it was built on traditions of excellence and with a global vision.  There is a wide range of course offerings in business and economics, engineering as well as the humanities and sciences. 

There are two main campuses in Clayton and Caulfield, which are located about twenty and forty minutes each by public transportation from the center of Melbourne, the cultural and intellectual heart of Australia.   Although the campuses are set within an urban context, there is a truly natural feel to each, with wallabies roaming freely.  

Monash has a very diverse student population and attracts international students from around the globe.  There are specialized services and activities for international students, and there is even an exchange club.

Room and Board
There are five halls of residence at Monash, located at the Clayton campus, which together provide accommodation, meals, facilities and services to approximately 1,000 people - students, senior residents and staff. All meals are available on a cash basis from the Halls central dining rooms, which are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days per week throughout the academic year. Students may reserve on-campus accommodations in consultation with Monash International. Students may also opt to live off-campus in a location more central to downtown Melbourne; however, off-campus accommodations are the responsibility of the student to arrange.

MURDOCH UNIVERSITY
Perth, Western Australia

Murdoch University was established in 1973 as Western Australia's second research university. Set on a beautifully landscaped campus, Murdoch University is located approximately twenty minutes by car from Perth's city center and ten minutes from the port of Fremantle. Perth is a lovely city of close to one million people and is famous as a seaside city where the sun always shines. With a current enrollment of 15,000 students, including approximately 3,000 international students from over 50 countries, Murdoch is a moderately sized university with a vibrant and cosmopolitan campus life. The university is divided into four academic divisions and offers a wide range of subject matters that could attract exchange students from a variety of majors. The academic divisions are science and technology, social sciences and humanities, business and law, and veterinary and biological sciences.

Room and Board
On campus housing is available at Student Village, which houses 500 students in self-contained furnished flats. Most flats are single-bedroom accommodations and double rooms are available. There are other on-campus accommodations available on the edge of the campus. Most exchange students have preferred to live on campus at the student village. There is also off-campus housing in homestays or a shared flat or house with other students.

FLINDERS UNIVERSITY
Adelaide, South Australia

This beautiful hillside campus overlooks the St. Vincent Gulf and is located 10 km from the center of Adelaide. Adelaide is situated on a coastal plain between beaches and the wooded slopes of the Adelaide Hills. Often called the cultural capital of Australia, it offers a thriving arts scene and a fabulous international biennial arts festival. Flinders University combines a safe, suburban location with convenience of regular bus service to the city. Founded in 1966, Flinders is a modern, progressive university with an international reputation for teaching and research. Student enrollment is approximately 16,000. Flinders has strong science and technology programs with highly ranked departments of psychology and biology, highlighting marine biology. The International Office provides outstanding service and support for exchange students with airport reception, an excellent orientation program, and organized field trips.

Room and Board
Students may stay in University Hall, a residential college located conveniently on campus. The hall provides single study/bedrooms with shared kitchens and bathroom facilities on each floor.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY 
Brisbane, Queensland
Undergraduate Program
Semester Programs
Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is a bustling city of 1.8 million people. It is surrounded by mountains to the west and the resort areas of the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast to the south and north. The scenic Brisbane River winds its way through the city with regular trips made by excursion boats and ferries. Queensland's climate is mild in winter and hot in summer. The Queensland Cultural Centre is located on the River Bank, and is a state-of-the-art performing arts center. Griffith University was established in 1971 and is one of the fastest growing universities in Australia with more than 37,000 students enrolled at its five campuses: Nathan, Mt. Gravatt, Gold Coast, the Queensland College of Art, and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. All the campuses except the Logan are located in a natural bushland setting. The Logan campus is located in Meadowbrook, Queensland's third largest city. With the exception of the Gold Coast campus, all campuses are within 15 minutes from the center of Brisbane. The Gold Coast campus is approximately 42 miles from Brisbane in Southport, one of Australia's prime tourist destinations.

Room and Board
Students may choose to stay in on-campus accommodations including dormitories or apartments. These all have kitchens and telephones, as well as a laundry and a linen service. Homestay is also an option; it is accommodation offered to students by Australian families who live within commuting distance of the campus.

JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY
Townsville, Queensland

Available to University of Miami Marine Science Majors Only
Townsville is a city of approx 160,000 people, located in North Queensland on the Coral Sea. It is Australia's largest tropical city-the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Located on a latitude similar to Fiji and Tahiti, the climate, particularly in the winter is unsurpassed. With beaches, deserted tropical islands, and the vast open spaces of the Outback nearby, as well as easy access to Southeast Asia, the Townsville area has a lot to offer the exchange student. The James Cook University (JCU) is recognized throughout the world as a leader in environmental and ecological research, and its Department of Marine Biology is world famous. As a former college of the University of Queensland, it enrolled its first students in 1961. JCU became autonomous in 1970, and currently enrolls more than 15,000 students. The university is located about 10 minutes from the city center in a lovely, tropical, and natural setting with eucalyptus and palm trees.

UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG 
Brisbane, Queensland
Undergraduate Program

Wollongong is a modern, multicultural city of 263,000 just 80 km south of Sydney. Wollongong has a clean environment with spectacular scenery, magnificent ocean beaches, unspoiled coastal forest areas, and is an easy hour and a half trip by train or car to Sydney. Wollongong has the friendliness of a smaller town combined with the cultural sophistication of a large city. The University of Wollongong, with some 22,700 students, is a perfect choice for those who want to study at a friendly campus in an attractive suburban setting that is close to a world-class large city - Sydney. The campus is 5 km from the city center, and is close to the rail connection to Sydney. In 1994, the university was ranked in the top 10 universities in Australia by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Higher Education. At Wollongong, there is an emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching.

UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SYDNEY

Sydney
Undergraduate Program

The city of Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, and has a population of over 4.2 million people. It is very much the cultural and commercial capital of Australia as well as the gateway to Southeast Asia. Some of the attractions include Darling Harbor, Sydney Opera House, Harbor Bridge, Sydney Tower, the Botanic Gardens, and the beaches. Transportation is excellent and inexpensive, but central Sydney is very much a walking city with many small arcades and interesting historic buildings. UTS is a new university and an urban commuter school with 32,000 students. It is a high-rise campus just 5 miles from the center of Sydney. Classrooms are equipped with the latest in technology, and the faculty are actively involved with business and industry in Australia and throughout Southeast Asia. The business school has the largest faculty and most students and is one of the top four business schools in Australia.

EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY

Available to University of Miami School of Music students only. Edith Cowan University is a forward-thinking institution known for innovative and creative courses and research. With about 23,000 students enrolled, it also boasts over 3,000 international students from more than 80 countries around the world. Exchange students will take courses at ECU's Mount Lawley campus, which is located in a vibrant residential community a few miles from the heart of Perth. Public transportation makes campus very accessible to the commuter.

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY
Melbourne, Geelong, and Warrnambool, Australia

Deakin University is a top-ranked research university that excels in teaching and learning and prides itself in its student-centered focus.  It is one of Australia’s largest universities with its student population spread over five campuses in Melbourne, Geelong, and Warrnambool.   Each campus has excellent facilities and its own special environment.  Melbourne has two campuses, of which the exchange students attend Burwood located in a suburb about 45 minutes by tram from the city center.  Geelong, about 45 miles from Melbourne, has two waterfront campuses at Waurn Ponds and Waterfront.  The Warrnambool campus is in southwest Victoria along the coastline about three hours by car from Melbourne.

The University of Syndey was founded in 1850 and is Australia's first university.  Committed to academic excellence in teaching and research, the University of Syndey is a leading institution in the Group of Eight which consists of the top eight research universities in Australia.  Additionally, its excellence is renown internationally through collaborative research and partnerships.  The enrollment is 45,000 with approximately 8,600 international students.The university has nine teaching campuses with the main campus located ten minutes by bus from the heart of the Sydney business district.This campus is very beautiful with many parks and courtyards, and the buildings are traditional in architecture.  The majority of the exchange students study at this downtown campus.
