Internal Funding Programs

Coral Gables and RSMAS Faculty | Medical Faculty | Graduate Students

Coral Gables and RSMAS Faculty:

Internal funding programs are designed to foster excellence in research and creative scholarship at the University of Miami. The Provost Research Awards provide both salary support and support for direct research costs. The awards are classified into three categories based on discipline: the Max Orovitz Research Awards in the Arts and Humanities, the James W. McLamore Research Awards in Business and the Social Sciences, and the Research Awards in the Natural Sciences and Engineering.

The 2010 competition for the Provost's Research Awards is now open:

Note:The request for proposals and application are PDF forms. You can download Adobe Professional to fill out the application, save the document and return to complete the application at a later time.

Applications are evaluated based on four criteria:

  • Scholarly, scientific, and/or creative merit.
  • Likelihood the work will lead to major publications or externally reviewed scholarly or creative activity.
  • Prospect the work will result in successful applications for extramural funding.
  • Qualifications, experience, productivity, and promise of the applicant.

General Research Funds | Dean's NIH Bridge Program | Interdisciplinary Research Development Initiative

General Research Funds: Each year the Dean of the Miller School of Medicine allots general research funds to facilitate programmatic growth in the basic, translational and clinical research arenas. The purpose of internal support is to foster new research initiatives as well as to support existing activities. Ultimately, the goal is to build robust extramurally funded research programs. Both basic and clinical research are eligible for funding, with the stipulation that research projects are conducted by full-time faculty at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. All applications are scored on the basis of scientific merit and are ranked and funded competitively. Support for faculty salary will not be provided.

General research funds are allocated through three programs:

  • Pilot Study Grants provide up to $20,000 in direct research costs to assist faculty in jump-starting new research areas, including new and distinct research areas where the applicant has no existing funding or publications, as well as new direction(s) for existing research programs in which the applicant has past experience but no current funding.
  • Emergency Equipment Grants provide up to $20,000 in direct research costs to replace or repair intensively used equipment that unexpectedly breaks down or to upgrade existing equipment. These grants are not intended to cover routine or anticipated repair, maintenance, or service contracts.
  • Bridge Funding Grants provide up to $25,000 in direct research costs to assist faculty in maintaining their research program in the event of a funding lapse during the process of applying for additional extramural funding.

Dean's NIH Bridge Program: The increased competition for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding has produced lower pay-lines at all of the institutes. These lower pay-lines mean that Miller School faculty will likely need additional application cycles in order to successfully obtain new NIH awards and competitive renewals. These gaps in funding may put research programs at risk, many of which have taken significant resources and years to build. In order to maintain the continuity of our outstanding research programs, a pool of resources is available to sustain research that is competitive for NIH funding. These funds are available for up to one year while new or renewed support is pursued.

  • Eligibility:
    • Applicant must hold a primary faculty appointment at the Miller School of Medicine and have been a PI on an NIH R-type grant application.
    • Applicant's most recently submitted NIH R-type grant application must not have been funded.
    • Applicant's most recently submitted NIH R-type grant application must have scored within 10% of the pay-line.
    • Any PI incentive program dollars and/or no-cost extension funds must be exhausted.
  • Budget and Award Terms:
    • PIs may request up to 50% of the recommended first year direct cost budget (excluding faculty salaries).
    • Payments will be made quarterly and after the PI and relevant Department Chair or Center/Institute Director submit a letter to the Executive Dean for Research and Research Training assuring that other funding has not been obtained in the interim.
    • Funds must be spent in accordance with the submitted budget and any unused funds must be returned.

Please contact Dr. Jennifer McCafferty-Cepero (jmccafferty@med.miami.edu) for information on how to apply.

Interdisciplinary Research Development Initiative (IRDI): The objective of the IRDI is to provide resources to stimulate interdisciplinary research at the Miller School of Medicine that will lead to securing external research funds. The intent of the program is to catalyze collaborations among faculty in different disciplines that will lead to new research and scholarly projects. Awards will be made based on scholarly and intellectual merit as well as scope and potential impact. IRDI will provide funding on a competitive basis. All submissions must represent collaborative projects and include at least two faculty members from different disciplines, one of whom must have a primary appointment at the Miller School of Medicine.

  • Eligibility:
    • All full-time University of Miami faculty members are eligible.
    • At least one faculty member on each application must hold a primary faculty appointment at the Miller School of Medicine.
  • Budget and Award Terms:
    • The award term is one year and is not renewable.
    • Awards will be made according to the proposed budget.
    • The maximum amount for any one award will be $100,000.
    • Applicants must commit to submitting an external funding proposal for the project within 12 months after the award terminates.
    • Budgets must be consistent with the scope of the proposed project.
    • Annual progress reports are required for the award year and for two years following the completion of the award. Reports will detail the project's progress and list all proposals submitted and any funding received for work related to IRDI-sponsored research.

The 2009 IRDI competition has closed and you may view this year's awardees (in PDF). For more information, please refer to last year's IRDI application (in PDF).
