Florida Bright Futures Scholarship RecipientsThe Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program is a lottery-funded scholarship that rewards Florida high school graduates who demonstrate high academic achievement and enroll in an eligible public or private post-secondary educational institution within three years of high school graduation. It is the umbrella program for three state-funded scholarships: Florida Academic Scholars (FAS), Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) and the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars based on academic achievement in high school, SAT and ACT scores, and fulfillment of certain course requirements. There have been changes in the way the state handles these funds since last year and it is very important that you understand these changes in order to prevent creating a balance on your student account.Important:Awards for the 2009-2010 academic year will be on a per credit basis. Students receiving Florida Academic Scholars will receive $126 per credit, students receiving Florida Medallion Scholars and Gold Seal Vocational Scholars will receive $95 per credit and students in the Academic Top Scholars will receive $54 per credit. Example, if you are registered for 15 credit hours then you will receive the per credit amount of your award multiplied by 15 credit hours. Once the award has paid into your student account you may receive a refund or your balance might be zero; however, if you decide to drop from 15 credit hours to 12 credit hours then the Office of Financial Assistance Services will be required to adjust your award down and send back to the state the equivalent of 3 credit hours of your award. This will create a balance on your student account that you will be responsible for paying back to the University. As a result of these new changes we highly recommend that you discuss your situation with a Financial Aid Advisor prior to making any decisions to drop a class. This will give you a better understanding of what the financial ramifications are on your student account before you drop the class. If you have any questions regarding this process you should contact the Office of Financial Assistance Services at (305) 284-5212 or via e-mail at ofas@miami.edu. |
