Effective Alumni Networking in a Job Search
Alumni are excellent sources of career information, advice and opportunities, even those that may have been your fellow classmates. Alumni can be some of your most valuable job search networking contacts, but only if you utilize them effectively.
- Seek the right alumni
Use your alumni networks to gain information or access to hiring managers in departments of your target companies to give you the widest reach. Use the UM alumni directory and LinkedIn to find potential alumni who can lead you to the right contacts.
- Ask for information
Reach out to alumni who can provide you with information on the company they work for, or the department, or even about the hiring manager. Information is vital in your job search and be sure to give your best first impression. These contacts can lead you to others within the company that can provide yo with further inside information.
Sample informational questions to ask:
--
Could you describe one of your typical workdays for me?
-- What skills are required in your position on a day-to-day basis?
--
What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
--
What do find most enjoyable?
-- Are there any negatives to your job?
--
How would you describe the corporate culture?
-- What developments on the horizon could affect future opportunities?
-- What is the advancement potential in the field? What is a typical path?
--
How did you get your job?
-- Considering my background, how well do you think I would fit in this company and/or profession?
-- Taking into account my skills, education, and experience, what other career paths would you suggest I explore before making a final decision?
--
Is there anything else you think I need to know?
--
Who else would you recommend I speak with? When I call, may I use your name?
- Have your fellow alumnus/a vouch for you
Alumni who can speak well of you can be valuable assets in your job search. Referrals are more likely to get hired. Your alumni referral will do better if they're briefed on the job that you're pursuing, as well as the experience, skills, and personality traits it requires.
Connect with those with whom you have a common ground and history. Discussing your school memories is a great way to build rapport and break the ice. Have some fun while making valuable connections; connections that just might help you land a great job.
