University Friend Fred Havenick Passes
Fred Havenick, husband of University of Miami Trustee and President's Council member Barbara Hecht Havenick, A.B. ’72, J.D. ‘75, passed away Wednesday. Havenick was a life-long Miami area entrepreneur and supporter of the University of Miami and a member of the Citizen’s Board.
As president and CEO of the Flagler Dog Track, Havenick was a gaming enthusiast who lobbied for expanded facilities and opportunities in Miami. Commenting on his passing, University of Miami Donna E. Shalala said, “Many will remember him for his skills as a business man, but we at the University will remember him first as a dear friend and know we are all better for having had Fred a part of our lives.”
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, his children Izzy, B.S.C. ‘05, Jennifer, B.S.Ed. ‘03, Alex and Michael, and mother-in-law Florence Hecht, a Life Member of the Board of Trustees.
