The University of Miami Legacy Program was designed to recognize the commitment of its alumni to their alma mater who support and encourage their children or grandchildren to consider UM for college. The University of Miami Alumni Association works closely with campus partners to ensure a successful transition to college life at UM for our legacy families.
Build your Hurricane Heritage
Make a UM education part of your family tradition
The University of Miami continues its rise in prominence among academic research institutions around the world largely due to the support and contributions of our alumni. As admission to UM becomes increasingly more selective, it is important that we pay special attention to our relationship with alumni and take exceptional care in evaluating legacy applications.
Legacy Welcome Reception
Incoming legacy families were invited to a special reception hosted by the UM Alumni Association as an official welcome to campus on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. The event included the opportunity to meet other incoming legacy families, hear from UM administrators, and meet UM Alumni Association staff. Guests enjoyed refreshments and carnival style food and games as we congratulated the 2015 Legacy Scholarship Recipient, Nicole Stephens, and took a commemorative family photo!
Were you unable to join us? If so, please contact Erica Arroyo, B.S.C. ’03, M.A.L.S. ’08, Director, Development and Alumni Relations, to get your official commemorative legacy family frame: email@example.com.
Legacy Early Move In
One of the perks to being a legacy is early fall move in for freshmen living on campus! Visit the Department of Housing and Residential Life webpage for more information on move in times and date.
New Student Orientation
The University hosts several days of exciting events designed to provide new students and their families with the information necessary for a successful transition to UM
Legacy Information Sessions
The UM Alumni Legacy Admission Forums are part of a dynamic schedule of events during the Alumni Weekend celebration. Designed to help students learn how to become a competitive applicant for undergraduate and graduate admission (only for law, medical, and business applicants at the graduate level), the sessions are led by the University of Miami admission officers and cover the basics in terms of the application process, interviews, essays, and test scores. Students will get the benefit of personally meeting the admission officers for the University of Miami in a casual setting.
More than 200 future ’Canes applicants joined us during Alumni Weekend 2015, last November for the undergraduate and graduate legacy information sessions on the Coral Gables campus. See 2015 photos.
This weekend in the fall semester provides you and your family with the opportunity to visit and take part in the numerous activities and events that are planned for your enjoyment, including a University of Miami football game.

UM ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
Each year, the UM Alumni Association works with the Office of Admission and Office of Financial Aid to select one freshman recipient of a $5,000 renewable, legacy scholarship. Eligibility for the Legacy Scholarship is automatic for any legacy student who applies for admission and qualifies for financial aid.
To be considered, one need only complete their undergraduate application for admission to the University of Miami and identify the name of their alumni parent/grandparent on the Common Application. The student must also submit a Free Application for Free Federal Student Aid through the federal processor, with the University (school code 001536) listed as a recipient of the results.
Recipients are notified over the summer of their selection by a representative of the Office of Alumni Relations.
