Each year, the University of Miami is excited to welcome back a famous 'Cane as the Grand Marshal during Alumni Weekend and Homecoming.
The Hurricane legend who will return to campus and lead the Homecoming parade along with President Shalala, Sebastian the Ibis, the Band of the Hour, and the Hurricane Cheerleaders this year will be: Two-Time NBA Champion and former Hurricane Great James Jones BBA ’03! Jones is currently a small forward for the Two-Time Defending NBA Champion Miami Heat. He has appeared in 536 regular season games and has made 83 starts in his 10-year NBA career. He was drafted in 2003 by the Indiana Pacers, and has had career stops in Phoenix and Portland before being signed by the Miami Heat in 2008. He currently serves as the secretary-treasurer of the National Basketball Players Association. He is also the Heat’s player representative and a member of the NBAPA. Jones graduated with a degree in finance from the University of Miami where he was a member of the National Honor Society and carried a 3.41 GPA. During his time with the Hurricanes he averaged 11.1 points a game, 5.0 rebounds, 1.57 blocks, 1.2 assists, 1.12 steals and 27.5 minutes in 122 games (89 starts) while shooting 38.3 percent from the three-point range. He earned Big East All-Academic Honors in each of his 4 seasons and was UM’s first Verizon Academic All-American in 2002-2003. He and his wife Destiny have three children (James Dylan “J.D.” Jones, Jadynn Alyssa Jones, and Jodie Marissa Jones). Jones owns an urban redevelopment company (James Jones Ventures) and has established the James Jones Legacy Foundation that helps children build a better future. We are proud and honored to have James Jones back on campus as our Grand Marshal!
